Since 1951, AWI, which stands for the Animal Welfare Institute, has made progress in their work of alleviating suffering inflicted on both domestic and wild animals by humans.
During the early years of their operation, The founder of AWI, Christine Stevens, tried to put an end to the cruel treatment of animals by scientists in experimental laboratories.
Inevitably, her excellent work grew to take on the welfare cause of other animals.
What is AWI’S mission?
Through the organization’s engagement with scientists, industry, policymakers, and the public, AWI aims to:
Put an end to factory farms, offer support to high-welfare family farms, and also help animals raised for food achieve Humane slaughter.
Improve the handling and housing of animals in studies, encourage both the development and implementation of better alternatives to experimentation on animals who are still alive.
Put an end to the use of steel-jaw leghold traps and also reform common brutal methods of killing and capturing wildlife
Preserve species that are threatened with extinction, and offer protection to wildlife from harmful destruction and exploitation of critical habitat
Protect companion animals from all forms of violence and cruelty, including adverse conditions in commercial animal trade
Prevent all types of injury and possible death of animals that may be caused by harsh or in conducive transport conditions.
What AWI needs from the public
AWI needs the help of individuals to continue their efforts; thus, they are asking people to make a membership donation.
The minimum amount acceptable as AWI membership donation is $35, except for students and senior citizen membership, which is $10.
Members of AWI enjoy tons of benefits, including a quarterly subscription to the AWI magazine, and a chance to get free copies of their books and some other materials when they are published.
