Since 1951, AWI, the Animal Welfare Institute, has progressed in alleviating suffering inflicted on both domestic and wild animals by humans.

During the early years of their operation, The founder of AWI, Christine Stevens, tried to end the cruel treatment of animals by scientists in experimental laboratories.

Inevitably, her excellent work grew to take on the welfare cause of other animals.

What is AWI’s mission?

Through the organization’s engagement with scientists, industry, policymakers, and the public, AWI aims to:

End factory farms, offer support to high-welfare family farms, and help animals raised for food achieve Humane slaughter.
