Horse breeds start with the letter E, including some of the most popular breeds.

Horse Breeds That Start With the Letter E

1. East Bulgarian

The East Bulgarian are horse breeds that start with E, originating in Bulgaria. It is the only breed of Horse that originated in Bulgaria, and it was developed by crossing local breeds with Thoroughbreds imported to the region by the Ottoman Empire. It is a tall horse, usually standing 16-17 hands or 64-68 inches at the withers.  

It is also known as the Kustendil horse and is one of the three breeds indigenous to Bulgaria. These horse breeds that start with E have been described as strong, heavy, and have excellent stamina.

These horse breeds that start with E have an average height of 14 hands and come in either brown or bay coloration. 

The most distinguishing characteristic of this horse breed is the width of its forehead, which can be up to 2 inches wide, with large eyes and a short head shape.

2. Eriskay Pony

The Eriskay Pony is a small pony that originally came from Eriskay Island off the coast of Scotland. These horse breeds that start with E are best known for their endurance and hardiness, making them popular choices as working horses.

However, today, they are primarily used in children and as companion animals. The Eriskay Pony is a compact and hardy breed that originated on the island of Eriskay in Scotland.

They are well-known for their ability to thrive in harsh conditions and produce abundant milk. These horse breeds that start with E have an estimated population of 1,000 to 2,000 ponies worldwide. 

The Eriskay Pony has a dense double coat with waterproof hair that typically ranges from black to dark brown.

Their height averages 13 hands high at the withers, and their weight averages about 810 pounds (362 kilograms). Males are often taller than females by up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) at the withers.

3. Esperia Pony

The Esperia Pony is among the horse breeds that start with E; the pony originated in Italy. It was originally known as the Italian Shetland Pony but has been renamed the Esperia Pony.

This horse breed typically stands 13-14 hands high and ranges from solid black to chestnut brown with a white or cream mane and tail. 

This pony has a large head and ears on top of its head. These horse breeds that start with E have a long, sloping back, high-set tail, and well-slanted legs. These ponies are small and come in many colors.

4. Estonian Draft

The Estonian Draft is among the horse breeds that start with E, originating in Estonia. It is also known as the Estonian Heavy Draft Horse or Estonian Draft Horse.

This breed has a slower growth rate than other draft horse breeds, but it does have the ability to work for long periods without becoming exhausted. 

It is also one of the few horse breeds that start with E and can be used for plowing and driving. The Estonian Draft stands between 16 and 17 hands high, with horses weighing approximately 1,500 pounds at maturity.

They are known for their beautiful head, large Roman noses, and elegant necks. In addition to being used as draft horses, these horse breeds that start with E are often used as riding horses because they are calm and gentle creatures.

5. Estonian Native

The Estonian Natives are ancient horse breeds that start with E and can be traced back to the Bronze Age.

This horse breed that started with has been used for centuries by Estonians as a working horse but is also a popular recreational riding horse. The Estonian Native stands between 14-16 hands and has long legs with slender hooves.

It is usually chestnut in color but may have some lighter or darker spots on its skin. This breed is gentle and easy to handle when handled regularly from a young age. This makes it an ideal choice for children or adults who are new to horses.

7. Exmoor Pony

Exmoor ponies originated from the Exmoor region in England, but these horse breeds that start with E live worldwide.

They are one of the oldest pony breeds used for cattle herding, hunting, and pulling carriages. Today, they are mainly used as show ponies and pets. 

They have a sweet temperament and love to play. These horse breeds that start with E have delicate heads with small ears set close together. Their coat can be black, bay or grey with a dorsal stripe running down their spine. 

They stand between 12-14 hands tall at the shoulder – about 4 feet tall at the withers – depending on the age and sex of the animal. Their weight ranges from 500 to 800 pounds for males and 400 to 650 for females.
