Goose hunting season in West Virginia runs longer than most hunters expect. The 2025–26 calendar started with an early Canada goose season on September 1 and carried the regular goose season through January 31. The Mountain State sits in the Atlantic Flyway, so you can hunt resident birds in September and migrants in winter.

This article covers season structure, species, daily limits, licensing, and legal hunting methods. If you hunt more than geese, the West Virginia duck hunting laws overlap with much of what follows.

Important Note: West Virginia sets its migratory bird dates each year within federal frameworks. When this article was researched, I could not confirm the 2026–27 goose segments on a WVDNR page. The most recent dates verified from official-sourced listings are for the 2025–26 season, and they are labeled that way below. Check the current Migratory Bird Hunting Regulations Summary at WVdnr.gov/hunting-regulations before you hunt.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in West Virginia

West Virginia splits goose hunting into an early September season and a regular season in three segments. The regular season usually starts in October, takes a break in mid-November, and returns in December. Youth hunters get two dedicated days ahead of the general seasons.

Here is the 2025–26 structure, listed in West Virginia’s hunting regulations guide on eRegulations.

Season Segment2025–26 Dates
Early Canada GooseSeptember 1–14, 2025
Youth Waterfowl HuntsSeptember 20, 2025 and November 1, 2025
Canada and White-Fronted Goose, First SplitOctober 14–19, 2025
Canada and White-Fronted Goose, Second SplitNovember 8–16, 2025
Canada and White-Fronted Goose, Third SplitDecember 8, 2025 to January 31, 2026

Treat these as a pattern rather than a promise for this fall. The segments have shifted by a few days from year to year. The 2024–25 regular season, for example, ran October 1–20, November 11–16, and December 9 to January 31.

Important Note: Sources disagree on one October date. WVDNR’s 2025 announcement said goose seasons were open October 4–19. The eRegulations listing above shows October 14–19 for the first Canada and white-fronted goose split. Check the printed summary for the exact opening day.

Canada Goose Season in West Virginia

Canada geese are the bread and butter of West Virginia goose hunting. The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is the bird most hunters pursue here, and resident flocks are the reason the state can open a season as early as September 1. WVDNR opens Canada goose season on September 1 alongside mourning dove, sora, Virginia rail, and Wilson’s snipe.

The early season is the best chance to hunt local birds before migrants arrive. Resident geese feed on fields and ponds near water, and they tend to be less wary in September than they are in January. If you also hunt doves on opening weekend, the West Virginia dove season shares the same September 1 start.

After the early season closes, the regular season opens in October with the three-way split. Late-season hunting from December into January is when cold weather pushes migrant Canada geese south into the state.

Pro Tip: The gap between the first and second splits is short, and the November segment is only about a week long. Mark all three segments on your calendar before September so you do not miss the middle window.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in West Virginia

Snow geese, white-fronted geese, and brant each follow their own rules in West Virginia. White-fronted geese hunt on the same dates as Canada geese. Blindbook’s 2025–26 table lists Canada and white-fronted geese as sharing the same dates and limits. The greater white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons) is a less common bird in the state, so a banded or marked one is worth reporting.

Snow and blue geese are grouped with the dark geese in the regular season framework. In 2024–25, WVDNR listed snow and blue goose on the same three-way split as Canada and white-fronted geese. The snow goose (Anser caerulescens) comes in a white and a dark “blue” color phase, and both are legal.

Ross’s goose (Anser rossii) looks like a smaller snow goose with a shorter, stubbier bill. West Virginia’s published listings use “snow and blue goose” as the category name. Ross’s geese are classed as light geese in the Atlantic Flyway, but confirm how the current summary words it before you shoot.

Brant (Branta bernicla) get a late and short window. The 2025–26 brant season ran January 2–31, 2026. Brant are a coastal species, so you will see very few of them in the mountains. Know the difference between a brant and a small Canada goose before you pull the trigger.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in West Virginia

Daily limits depend on the species and season segment, and the sources I found do not agree for the most recent season. Bag limits for dark geese are an area where a quick check of the official summary pays off.

Species or SeasonDaily BagPossessionSource Note
Early Canada Goose5 per day in aggregate15 in aggregateHuntWise
Canada and White-Fronted Geese5 per day in aggregate15 in aggregateHuntWise
Snow and Blue Geese5 per day in aggregate15 in aggregateHuntWise
Brant1 per day3 in possessionHuntWise

Important Note: Blindbook’s 2025–26 table lists a daily bag of 3 and a possession limit of 9 for dark geese. The HuntWise numbers above match the 5 and 15 shown in the 2024–25 state summary. I could not resolve which applies to the most recent season, so use the current WVDNR summary as the final word.

“Aggregate” means the limit covers all species in the group combined. An aggregate daily bag limit applies when you hunt more than one area or species that share a combined limit. A hunter who shoots three Canada geese and two white-fronted geese has reached a 5-bird aggregate.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in West Virginia

A spring light goose conservation order is a special season after the regular season that targets overabundant snow geese and Ross’s geese. It usually removes the daily bag and possession limits. The goal is population control, not a normal hunting season.

The sources I reviewed did not list a West Virginia spring conservation order. Virginia’s neighbor to the south does publish one, and its rules show what to expect. Virginia’s page says the 2027 Light Goose Conservation Season will be determined in September 2026, and the order carries no daily or possession limit.

If WVDNR opens a conservation order, it will appear in the migratory bird summary, not in the standard goose season listing. Do not assume Virginia, Maryland, or Ohio rules apply in West Virginia. If you hunt across state lines, compare each state’s rules, such as the Maryland goose season and the Ohio goose season. Federal rules for conservation-order hunting can also differ from the regular season, so read the fine print first.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in West Virginia

Every goose hunter in West Virginia needs a state license, a federal duck stamp, and HIP proof. Some of these have exceptions. The table below sorts each requirement.

RequirementWho Needs ItCost or Detail
Resident Hunting License and Conservation StampResidents age 15 or olderClass A resident hunting license: $19 (2025–26)
Nonresident Hunting LicenseAll nonresidents, except lifetime license holders, regardless of ageClass E nonresident hunting: $119 (2025–26)
Federal Duck StampAll hunters 16 or older, including on their own land$25
HIP RegistrationLicensed huntersFree

The landowner exception is narrow. If you hunt your own property under landowner privilege with no license required, you do not need a HIP card. You still need the federal duck stamp. Stamps are sold online through the e-stamp program at duckstamp.com. You can read the official answers on the WVDNR waterfowl hunting page.

Youth rules changed recently. The 2025–26 youth waterfowl season expanded to include everyone under age 18. Earlier rules set the limit at 15 and under, and youth hunters had to be accompanied by a licensed adult age 18 or older. For a full breakdown of fees and hunter education, see the West Virginia hunting license requirements.

Pro Tip: Sign your duck stamp in ink across the face before you hunt. West Virginia’s federal regulations require each waterfowl hunter 16 and older to carry the signed stamp.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in West Virginia

Shooting hours for geese run from one-half hour before sunrise until sunset. WVDNR’s 2022–23 announcement set those hours for Canada goose, ducks, and other waterfowl. That announcement is a few seasons old, so verify the hours in the current summary, especially for the September early season.

Non-toxic shot is mandatory. WVDNR reminds hunters that only approved non-toxic shot may be used for ducks and geese. Steel, bismuth, and tungsten blends are the usual choices, and lead is illegal for waterfowl. Federal law also limits a shotgun to three shells total, so plug your magazine.

Baiting is illegal. Federal regulations define bait as grain or any other feed or edible enticement, including nonedible imitations of it. Scout your field carefully, because planted and standing crops can be legal while scattered grain is not.

Sunday hunting is allowed in West Virginia. Waterfowl hunting is permitted on Sundays on private lands and on state or federal lands managed by WVDNR. Deer gun season also affects waterfowl hunters. WVDNR modified concurrent waterfowl and deer gun season limitations for 2025–26, so check the West Virginia deer season dates before you plan a November or December hunt.

Last, report any banded bird you harvest. WVDNR asks hunters to report banded birds online at reportband.gov. The details of each regulation change every year, which is why the WVDNR migratory game bird announcement and the printed summary matter more than any blog, including this one.
