Goose Hunting Season in Kentucky
Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Goose hunting season in Kentucky runs in three stages. It has a split September Canada goose opener, a Thanksgiving-to-mid-February main season, and a late-winter conservation order with no daily bag limit. That gives you more calendar than most states offer.

The September zones for 2026 are already closed, so your next opening day is Nov. 26, 2026. That leaves time to sort out your permits, check your zone, and scout fields along the Mississippi Flyway.

This guide covers the 2026-27 dates, the bag and possession limits for each goose group, the licenses you must carry, and the shooting-hour and gear rules that decide whether a hunt is legal. Dates and limits come from Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) pages. Check the current KDFWR guide before you head out, because the department can amend regulations.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in Kentucky

Kentucky’s goose calendar covers Canada geese (Branta canadensis), cackling geese (Branta hutchinsii), greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), brant (Branta bernicla), snow geese (Anser caerulescens), and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii). Goose seasons are based on management plans that Flyway Councils develop with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The number of days and the bag limits change with the health of each population.

The KDFWR seasons planner lists these 2026-27 dates:

Season2026-27 DatesNotes
September Canada Goose, Western ZoneSept. 1-15, 2026Closed for 2026
September Canada Goose, Eastern ZoneSept. 16-30, 2026Closed for 2026
Canada/Cackling Goose, White-Fronted Goose, and BrantNov. 26, 2026 – Feb. 15, 2027Statewide
Snow Goose (Including Ross’s Goose)Nov. 26, 2026 – Feb. 15, 2027Statewide
Light Goose Conservation OrderFeb. 16 – March 31, 2027Follows the regular season

The regular season is set as Thanksgiving Day through Feb. 15, so the opener moves each year with the holiday. Kentucky also holds a youth-only waterfowl weekend. The KDFWR hunting guide lists youth-only waterfowl days for Nov. 21, 2026 and Feb. 13, 2027.

Because the regular goose season overlaps with fall deer hunting, plan your fields and blinds around other hunters. If you also hunt the early season, the dove hunting season in Kentucky opens in September, close to the September Canada goose dates.

Important Note: Sources disagree on the February youth day. KDFWR’s hunting guide lists Feb. 13, 2027, while one third-party summary lists Feb. 14. Confirm the date with KDFWR before you take a young hunter out.

Canada Goose Season in Kentucky

Kentucky gives you two chances at Canada geese each year. The first is a 15-day September season aimed at resident birds. It lets hunters take Canada geese that nest in Kentucky. The second is the regular season, when migrants arrive from the north.

September Canada Goose Zones

The Western Goose Zone covers every county west of and including Hardin, Nelson, Washington, Marion, Taylor, Adair, and Cumberland. The Eastern Goose Zone covers all other counties. The commission created the split after hunters said western Kentucky would have more productive hunting with an earlier season. You can read the original announcement in the KDFWR zone news release.

Cave Run Lake, the public land in the Ballard Zone, and West Kentucky WMA are closed during the September season. Private land in the Ballard Zone is open.

Pro Tip: Look up your county against the zone boundary before you book a September hunt. A county line can put you on the wrong side of a two-week date gap.

Regular Season Canada Geese

From Nov. 26 to Feb. 15, Canada and cackling geese are part of a combined dark-goose limit with white-fronted geese and brant. Dive Bomb Industries’ Kentucky goose guide points to Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake in the west, Barren River Lake in the south-central region, and the Green River region as popular areas. Hunters often pair field setups near those waters with the late-season push of migrating birds.

If your hunting plans also include whitetails, read up on the deer hunting season in Kentucky. Deer gun seasons and goose seasons share some of the same ground, and landowners and WMA managers may restrict access on peak days.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Kentucky

These species share the same regular-season window as Canada geese, but each follows its own limit. Snow geese (including Ross’s geese) and the dark-goose group both run Nov. 26, 2026 through Feb. 15, 2027. The differences show up in the bag.

  • Snow and Ross’s geese: 20 per day, with a possession limit of 60.
  • White-fronted geese: Part of the 5-bird combined limit, with no more than 2 white-fronted geese.
  • Brant: Brant are in the regulations to protect hunters who might take one mixed in with other goose flocks. The daily limit is one.
  • Cackling geese: They count with Canada geese under the same sub-limit.

White-fronted geese and brant are less common than Canada geese in most Kentucky fields. Snow and Ross’s geese tend to show up in flocks large enough to push you toward the 20-bird limit on a good day. Neighboring states in the same flyway, such as Illinois and Ohio, run their own goose calendars, so the dates and limits above do not carry across the border.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Kentucky

The two limits work differently, and mixing them up is a common way hunters get cited. The daily bag limit is the most of a species you may take during legal shooting hours in one calendar day. The possession limit is the most you may have at any time, whether on you, at home, or at a taxidermist.

The KDFWR waterfowl page and the hunting guide list these 2026-27 limits:

Season or SpeciesDaily LimitPossession Limit
September Canada Goose (Either Zone)515
Canada/Cackling, White-Fronted, and Brant (Regular Season)5 combined: 3 Canada, 2 white-fronted, 1 brantTriple the daily limit (15)
Snow Goose (Including Ross’s)2060
Light Goose Conservation OrderNoneNone

Common Mistake: If you take a brant, you must reduce your Canada or white-fronted limit so you never exceed five dark geese in a day. Count brant first on a mixed-flock morning.

Out-of-state travelers should compare these numbers with their home rules. Indiana hunters, for example, can check the goose hunting season in Indiana to see how limits differ for the same flyway birds. Limits are set state by state within federal frameworks.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Kentucky

The conservation order is a late-winter extension aimed at light geese, a group that includes snow geese and Ross’s geese. It runs Feb. 16 through March 31, 2027, starting right after the regular season closes. KDFWR lists no daily or possession limit during this period.

The order comes with looser equipment and access rules than the regular season. Shooting hours extend to one-half hour after sunset. Pit and blind restrictions that apply on some WMAs do not apply during the conservation order.

Read the paperwork requirements before you go. One 2026-27 summary lists the order as requiring a free permit and reporting. You can compare that against the state outdoors season summary and confirm the details with KDFWR.

The conservation order falls right before spring gobbler season. If you plan to stay in the field into spring, see the turkey hunting season in Kentucky for how the dates line up.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Kentucky

You need a short stack of documents to hunt geese legally. The hunting guide says to obtain and carry a hunting license unless exempt, a state-issued migratory bird/waterfowl permit unless exempt or under 16, and a signed federal duck stamp unless under 16. All migratory bird hunters must also complete the Harvest Information Program (HIP) survey through the My Profile online portal before hunting.

  1. Hunting license: Hunters 16 and older need an annual, 1-day, or 7-day hunting license plus the Kentucky Migratory Bird/Waterfowl Permit.
  2. Kentucky Migratory Bird/Waterfowl Permit: Carry it with your license while hunting.
  3. Federal duck stamp: Sign it before you hunt waterfowl.
  4. HIP registration: Finish it through your online profile before your first hunt.

Licenses and permits are not required for youths under 12. Kentucky’s license year runs March 1 through the end of February, so a license bought for the 2026-27 year covers the full goose season, including the conservation order.

Some western Kentucky WMAs also control access. On Forked Lake, Indian Camp Lake, and Fish Lake, waterfowl hunting after Nov. 1 is from designated sites assigned by preseason drawing. For other states with similar permit stacks, see the goose hunting season in Iowa. You can read the full KDFWR hunting and trapping guide for fee schedules and exemptions.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Kentucky

Hunting hours are tied to sunrise and sunset, and the conservation order changes the clock. The KDFWR waterfowl page lists them this way:

  • Regular goose season: One-half hour before sunrise to sunset.
  • Snow Goose Conservation Order: One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
  • Wildlife Management Areas: Regular hours unless the Public Hunting section notes otherwise.

The legal method is a shotgun loaded with nontoxic shot. Falconry seasons for waterfowl also exist. KDFWR’s regulation summary says shot larger than size T, or shotshells longer than 3.5 inches, are not allowed.

A few site rules catch hunters off guard:

  • Areas manipulated for dove hunting are not legal for waterfowl hunting.
  • At Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, you cannot hunt migratory game birds between the last Saturday in September and Nov. 30. You can verify that wording in 301 KAR 2:225.
  • Pit and blind rules on some WMAs apply during the regular season but not the conservation order.

Shooting hours differ by state, so check the rules before you cross the line. Wisconsin hunters who head south can compare them against the goose hunting season in Wisconsin.

When your goose hunting is done, other Kentucky seasons keep the calendar full. You can start planning with the bear hunting season in Kentucky for another species with its own zones and permits.
