Being at home or coming home to meet your dog’s poop somewhere in the house can be so unpleasant because of its sight and smell.

But what are the steps on how to stop a dog from pooping in the house? As pet owners, you’ll get furious and disturbed and might be confused about what to do next.

However, you need to stop this habit of your dog pooping around in the house.

Before thinking of how to stop a dog from pooping in the house, you should determine the cause.

If it is an older dog, there’s a possibility that it doesn’t have any training on that. Also, it could be a medical issue or anxiety.

Whichever way, let us discuss how to stop a dog from pooping in the house.

How to Stop a Dog from Pooping in the House

1. Train your Dog

Housetraining starts by walking your dogs very often. You can begin your walk by visiting the garden thrice daily, primarily for peeing.

It would be best to do this after meals, naps, etc. You should also understand that every dog breed has a preference for where they excrete.

If your dog was excreting on grass before you got it, it might be difficult to start excreting on paper. So, it’s essential to get that information.

It is also essential to be regular with the meals, naps, and visits to the garden so that it will get used to a routine for excretion.

2. Do Not Punish Them

One of the tips on how to stop a dog from pooping in the house is not to punish them. If your dog’s feces is due to stress, it’s not fair to punish it.

Punishing your dog for excreting in the house will only increase his anxiety, making him more likely to do it again.

Also, if you punish your dog for pooping in front of you, he may begin to avoid pooping in front of you, even on walks.

If the puppy poops after being outside, clean it up, disinfect the area with a pet-safe odor remover, and set a timer on your clock to remind you to take him out more frequently in the future.

To stop a dog from pooping in the house, you should not punish them.

The goal is to assist your dog in learning; becoming enraged or frightening your dog is not the way to do so.

3. Visit the Vet

Another possible cause for this is that your dog might be sick. Visiting the vet is another important way on how to stop a dog from pooping in the house.

Dogs that excrete stool inappropriately might be suffering from a bowel condition. The vet conducts tests on your dog.

These tests include X-rays, blood samples, and feces samples. Once the medical issue has been resolved, your pet’s inappropriate behavior should cease to exist due to the resolution.

If, on the other hand, your pet receives the all-clear from the vet but continues to defecate in the house, you’ll need to start focusing on behavioral modification approaches to address his inappropriate toileting.
