Goose Hunting Season in Mississippi: 2026-27 Dates, Limits, and Permits
October 31, 2026
Goose hunting season in Mississippi stretches across more than half the year. Resident Canada geese open the run on Sept. 1, and the spring Light Goose Conservation Order closes it on Mar. 31, 2027. In between, you get a regular winter season, a youth and veteran weekend, and a no-limit snow goose hunt.
The state sits in the Mississippi Flyway. That is one of four major migratory bird corridors in North America. This article lays out the 2026-27 dates, limits, permits, and shooting rules so you can plan your hunts around the real calendar.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Mississippi
Mississippi splits its goose hunting into three pieces: an early September season, a regular season that overlaps duck season, and the spring conservation order. The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) publishes the official season dates and bag limits on its hunting seasons page. The table below combines the MDWFP conservation order dates with the 2026-27 goose dates listed by State Outdoors.
| Season | 2026-27 Dates |
|---|---|
| Early Canada goose | Sept. 1-30, 2026 |
| Regular goose season | Nov. 13-29, Dec. 4-6, and Dec. 9, 2026-Jan. 31, 2027 |
| Youth, veteran, and active military waterfowl days | Feb. 6-7, 2027 |
| Light Goose Conservation Order | Oct. 1-Nov. 12, Nov. 30-Dec. 3, Feb. 1-5, and Feb. 8-Mar. 31 |
The regular Canada, white-fronted, and snow goose segments run Nov. 13-29, Dec. 4-6, and Dec. 9, 2026 through Jan. 31, 2027. The youth, veteran, and active military waterfowl days are listed as Feb. 6-7, 2027. That weekend lands in the gap between the two February conservation order segments.
Pro Tip: Mississippi has moved goose dates to overlap Thanksgiving before. MDWFP waterfowl coordinator Houston Havens said the 2025 change was made so the season overlapped the holiday. If you hunt over Thanksgiving week, confirm your segment dates before you book time off.
Important Note: Third-party sites summarize these dates, and the MDWFP 2026-27 hunting seasons PDF is the final word. Check it before opening day, because a typo on any aggregator site could cost you a citation.
Canada Goose Season in Mississippi
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) give Mississippi hunters two chances each year. The first is the resident season in September, when you hunt birds that live in the state year-round. The second is the regular winter season, when migrating birds arrive from the north.
An MDWFP article on goose hunting estimated Mississippi’s resident Canada goose population at around 31,000 birds. September hunts usually happen in dry fields, with layout blinds and full-body decoys. Reservoirs and other large bodies of water that hold geese all year are the other option.
Roebuck Lake in Leflore County is closed to the September Canada goose season. The daily bag limit for Canada geese is 5, with a possession limit of 15. The September window for 2026 has already closed, so your next Canada goose chance is the regular season opener on Nov. 13.
For ground-level strategy in neighboring flyway states, compare notes with the Illinois goose season breakdown. Illinois hunters work many of the same field-feeding patterns.
Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Mississippi
Snow geese (Anser caerulescens), including the blue color morph, and the smaller Ross’s goose (Anser rossii) are the “light geese” you will see in big flocks over Delta rice and wheat fields. Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), nicknamed “specklebellies,” are the other major winter goose. Brant (Branta bernicla) are a small sea goose that you may see only occasionally.
White-fronted geese share the regular season windows with Canada and snow geese, starting Nov. 13, 2026. The bag limit is 20 for snow, blue, and Ross’s geese, 3 for white-fronted geese, and 1 for brant. The same source lists the possession limits, which are shown in the next section.
Mississippi’s goose seasons line up with duck season, so you can hunt both on the same trip. Most regular goose days overlap with open duck season, though dates differ slightly by species. If you want the duck side of that trip, our Mississippi duck hunting laws guide covers it.
Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Mississippi
Daily limits are lower for dark geese than for light geese. Possession limits are higher than daily limits, but they apply to birds you have in the field, in the truck, or at home that are not yet processed. The table below uses the 2026-27 limits that eRegulations lists for Mississippi.
| Species | Daily Bag Limit | Possession Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Canada goose | 5 | 15 |
| Snow, blue, and Ross’s goose (regular season) | 20 | No limit |
| White-fronted goose | 3 | 9 |
| Brant | 1 | 3 |
| Any light goose during the Light Goose Conservation Order | No limit | No limit |
eRegulations lists those daily and possession limits, including no possession limit for snow, blue, and Ross’s geese. MDWFP confirms there is no daily or possession limit for snow, blue, or Ross’s geese under the conservation order. Keep your birds identifiable until you reach home, since wardens count species separately.
Important Note: Older sources disagree on limits. A past MDWFP goose article listed a 10-bird September possession limit, while current listings show 15. Go with the current MDWFP and eRegulations figures.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Mississippi
The Light Goose Conservation Order is the most liberal goose hunt in the state. MDWFP describes it as a special opportunity to reduce overpopulated snow, blue, and Ross’s geese when no other waterfowl seasons are open. It allows methods of take that are not allowed during regular waterfowl seasons.
For 2026-27, the order has four segments: Oct. 1-Nov. 12, Nov. 30-Dec. 3, Feb. 1-5, and Feb. 8-Mar. 31, 2027. The October and early December segments fill gaps in the fall calendar. The February and March segments are the spring hunt most people have in mind.
Permit and Method Rules
You need a free permit for the order, and no federal duck stamp is required. Blindbook’s summary of the 2025-26 rules lists electronic calls, unplugged shotguns, and shooting until 30 minutes after sunset. Method rules can change from year to year, so check the current MDWFP regulations before you put an e-caller in the truck.
What a Spring Hunt Looks Like
Rice fields drive the spring hunt. Snow Country Outfitters says rice fields are the main crop and the main reason these birds like Mississippi. The same outfitter puts an average guided day at 10-30 birds. Plan on a large decoy spread and a lot of patience.
Hunters who also chase the spring season in other states can read our Texas goose season and Indiana goose season articles. Spring turkey hunters should note that March conservation order dates overlap the opening of turkey season in Mississippi, so crowded fields are possible.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Mississippi
You need more than a basic license to hunt geese legally in Mississippi. The full list depends on your age and the season you are hunting. Here is what MDWFP requires of waterfowl hunters: a small game license (Sportsman or All-game also work), a Mississippi waterfowl stamp, a federal waterfowl stamp, and Harvest Information Program (HIP) certification.
- Hunting license: Residents ages 16-64 must have a hunting license, except when hunting on land titled in their own name.
- State and federal waterfowl stamps: These are required for anyone 16 or older who hunts waterfowl, including Lifetime License holders. The federal stamp expires every June 30, no matter when you buy it.
- HIP certification: Any license vendor can certify you for free.
- WMA user permit: Hunters on state Wildlife Management Areas need this in addition to their license and stamps, unless exempt.
- Hunter education: Anyone born after January 1, 1972 must complete hunter education before buying a hunting license.
The simplest route is the Waterfowl Hunter license. It bundles a small game license, WMA user permit, state waterfowl stamp, and HIP, but it does not include the Federal Duck Stamp. You still buy the federal stamp separately.
Youth under 16 do not need a license or stamps, but they must hunt with a properly licensed adult. If you hunt geese and other game, see our guides to dove season and deer season in Mississippi for those licenses.
Common Mistake: Many hunters buy a state stamp and forget the federal one. Federal stamps are electronic only, though a physical collector’s stamp is mailed after March 10. Keep your e-stamp receipt on your phone.
Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Mississippi
Regular-season shooting hours are simple. Hours for all migratory game birds run from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset, except under the Light Goose Conservation Order. That means you must stop shooting at sunset during the fall and winter seasons, even if birds are still moving.
Legal methods change by season. The table summarizes what to expect.
| Rule | Regular Season | Conservation Order |
|---|---|---|
| Shooting hours | Half hour before sunrise to sunset | Extended hours (verify the current end time with MDWFP) |
| Electronic calls | Not allowed | Allowed |
| Shot type | Non-toxic shot | Non-toxic shot |
| Bag limit | Species limits apply | No limit |
Steel shot is mandatory statewide for all waterfowl. Federal rules also cap regular-season shotguns at three shells total, so plug your magazine. You need landowner permission on private land, and WMAs can have special seasons and rules that differ from the statewide ones. Read the site rules for any WMA you plan to hunt.
Spring snow goose hunters in the Delta often also check MDWFP’s migratory bird rules to confirm stamp and HIP requirements. If you also hunt coastal swamps, our alligator season in Mississippi guide covers that permit system.
To sum up your 2026-27 plan: check the MDWFP PDF for final dates, buy your state license and stamps, carry your federal e-stamp, and get HIP certified. Add the free conservation order permit if you want to hunt light geese in the fall gaps or spring. With those boxes checked, you can hunt from the early September Canada goose season through the last spring snow goose day on March 31.
