Goose Hunting Season in Delaware: Dates, Bag Limits, and License Rules for 2026-27
October 31, 2026
Goose hunting season in Delaware runs longer than you’d expect from the second-smallest state. Resident Canada goose hunting opens Sept. 1, and regular snow goose dates stretch into March 2027. Between those bookends you get a migratory Canada goose split, a short brant season, and a light goose season that ends well after most duck hunters have put their decoys away.
This article covers the 2026-27 dates, bag limits, permits, and shooting rules for each goose species you can legally hunt in the First State. Dates come from Delaware’s published guide as relayed by outside hunting sites, so treat the tables as a planning tool and confirm against the official DNREC guide before you head out. Migratory bird seasons are set under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so final U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service approval is required before state selections become official.
If you hunt across state lines, our Maryland goose hunting season breakdown is worth a read, since many Delmarva hunters work both sides of the border.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Delaware
Delaware splits its goose hunting into four main windows: the early resident Canada goose season, the migratory Canada goose season (which includes white-fronted geese), a brant season, and the snow goose season. The table below shows the 2026-27 dates as listed by StateOutdoors.org.
| Species or Season | 2026-27 Dates | Daily Bag |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Canada Goose (outside September teal zone) | Sept. 1-25, 2026 | 15 |
| Resident Canada Goose (inside September teal zone) | Sept. 1-4, Sept. 5-13, Sept. 14-25, 2026 | 15 |
| Migratory Canada Goose (includes white-fronted) | Nov. 25-29, 2026; Dec. 23, 2026-Jan. 31, 2027 | 2 |
| Brant | Dec. 19, 2026-Jan. 2, 2027; Jan. 16-30, 2027 | 1 |
| Snow Goose (includes Ross’s) | Nov. 25, 2026-Jan. 31, 2027; Feb. 1-6; Feb. 8-Mar. 10, 2027 | 25 |
Sunday hunting is now open for all game species in Delaware, so every day inside these windows is fair game. That’s a real change for working hunters who used to be limited to Saturdays.
Important Note: Sources differ slightly on the February snow goose splits. Delaware’s own regulations page lists Nov. 25-Jan. 31, Feb. 1-5, and Feb. 6-Mar. 10. The table above uses the Feb. 1-6 and Feb. 8 split reported by a third-party guide, so verify the exact February dates in the official DNREC Hunting and Trapping Guide.
The state also sets aside special youth waterfowl days during the season. Check the guide for the 2026-27 youth dates before you plan a family hunt.
Canada Goose Season in Delaware
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the bread and butter of Delaware goose hunting, and you get two separate shots at them. The first is the early resident season in September, which targets birds that live here year-round. These geese love agricultural fields, golf courses, and suburban areas, and the early season can be excellent on private land where they’ve settled in.
DNREC says expanded hunting opportunities are available during the resident Canada goose season for the second year in a row, with a limit on those expanded methods where the September teal season is open. That teal overlap is the main thing that trips people up.
Migratory Canada goose season is a different animal. It opens for five days around Thanksgiving (Nov. 25-29, 2026), then reopens Dec. 23 and runs through Jan. 31, 2027. The daily bag is much tighter than in September, which we cover below.
Pro Tip: Scout field feeds the evening before. In Delaware’s farm country, geese tend to hit the same cut cornfield or winter wheat field day after day until pressure pushes them off.
Public ground is an option if you don’t have landowner permission. Past DNREC announcements listed resident goose hunting on Blackiston, Norman G. Wilder, Little Creek, Ted Harvey, and Milford Neck wildlife areas without special permits. Rules at wildlife areas change, so check the current guide for access requirements.
If you also chase other game in the First State, see our pages on dove hunting season in Delaware and deer hunting season in Delaware. Early September overlaps a lot of these seasons.
Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Delaware
Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) bring the biggest flocks and the longest season. Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are lumped in with them under the light goose rules, so the same dates and bag limit apply. The 2026-27 snow goose season is listed as Nov. 25, 2026 through Jan. 31, 2027, then Feb. 1-6 and Feb. 8 through Mar. 10, 2027.
Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), often called specks, don’t get their own season here. Delaware’s guide lists them under the migratory Canada goose season, with the white-fronted geese included in that season. That means you’re hunting them on the same dates and under the Canada goose bag limit.
Brant (Branta bernicla) are the shortest and most specialized opportunity. The 2026-27 brant season is split into Dec. 19, 2026 through Jan. 2, 2027, and Jan. 16-30, 2027. These are small sea geese tied to coastal bays, so most brant hunting happens along the Atlantic side of the state.
- Snow and Ross’s geese: Longest season, highest bag limit, flocks that can number in the thousands.
- White-fronted geese: Hunted during the migratory Canada goose season, less common, usually mixed in with Canada flocks.
- Brant: Two short segments in late December and January, one bird per day.
Hunters coming from the Midwest will find the layout familiar. Our Ohio goose hunting season page shows how a similar light goose structure works in another state.
Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Delaware
Bag limits change a lot between seasons, so check which window you’re hunting before you load the truck. The September resident season has the most generous limit of any dark goose season. Hunting Locator lists the resident Canada goose bag at 15 daily and 45 in aggregate.
| Goose Type | Daily Bag | Possession Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Canada Goose (September) | 15 | See note below |
| Migratory Canada Goose | 2 | 6 |
| Brant | 1 | 3 |
| Snow Goose (regular season) | 25 | None |
| Snow Goose (conservation order) | None | None |
The migratory Canada goose, brant, and snow goose figures above come from StateOutdoors.org’s 2026-27 breakdown. During a conservation order, DNREC has allowed no daily bag or possession limits.
Important Note: Older articles list a three-bird daily Canada goose limit, and another site lists a possession limit of 15 for resident geese instead of 45. Those figures don’t match the 2026-27 numbers above. Go with the limits printed in the current DNREC guide.
Possession limits matter most if you hunt several days in a row or freeze birds at camp. Keep your harvest records straight, and remember that a bird in your cooler counts toward your limit even if you didn’t shoot it that morning.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Delaware
The Spring Light Goose Conservation Order is a separate season that opens after the regular waterfowl seasons close. It’s open only for snow geese and happens when Delaware’s regular waterfowl seasons are closed. Liberal harvest methods are permitted to help cut a snow goose population that is damaging Arctic nesting grounds and wintering wetlands and farmland.
For the 2026 spring season, DNREC listed the conservation order as Feb. 1-6 and Feb. 8 through April 10, 2026. The 2027 order is less certain. Delaware’s regulations page says the states that offer the order have discussed suspending it until the population rebounds, and it may be suspended for 2027 if the population is below 500,000.
That’s why Delaware moved the regular season later. The regular snow goose dates were pushed out to run through March 10 in anticipation of a possible suspension. StateOutdoors.org noted that the 2027 order was still awaiting a final DNREC decision when it reviewed the state page.
Pro Tip: Don’t book a late-winter snow goose trip on the assumption that the order is open. Look for the final 2027 decision on the DNREC hunting page, and plan around the regular season through March 10 until it’s confirmed.
If the order does open, expect the same permit routine as past years. Hunters registered online to get a free conservation order permit number. Older DNREC notices also said hunters had to report their participation and success after the season.
Spring weather also brings ticks out early on the Delmarva Peninsula, so read our tick season in Delaware guide before you spend hours in marsh grass.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Delaware
Most goose hunters need four things in their pocket. Most duck and goose hunters need a state duck stamp, a federal duck stamp, and HIP, plus a valid Delaware hunting license. Here is the full checklist:
- A Delaware hunting license (or a license exemption number if you qualify).
- A Delaware waterfowl stamp. One hunting site says it is required for waterfowl hunters aged 16 and older.
- A federal duck stamp for regular goose seasons.
- A Delaware Harvest Information Program (HIP) number, which you need for all migratory bird hunting.
- A free conservation order permit number if you hunt snow geese in spring.
A federal waterfowl stamp has not been required during the conservation order, according to past DNREC announcements. Confirm that rule if the 2027 order opens.
Maryland residents get a special break on snow geese. They can hunt snow geese in Delaware on a Maryland resident hunting license if they obtain a Delaware License Exempt Number for snow geese, plus a Delaware waterfowl stamp, a federal duck stamp, and a HIP number.
Young hunters also have new options. Sixteen- and 17-year-olds can now hunt without direct supervision with parent or guardian permission, as long as they’ve completed basic hunter education. Newcomers hunting other seasons can start with our turkey hunting season in Delaware page, which covers the same licensing system.
Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Delaware
Shooting hours and methods depend on which season you’re in. Federal law sets the baseline for migratory birds, and Delaware adds its own rules on top. During the regular season, shotguns must be plugged so they hold no more than three shells, and non-toxic shot is required for waterfowl.
The September resident Canada goose season is more relaxed. The special methods include shooting hours from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset, unplugged shotguns, and electronic calls. There is one catch. Inside the September Teal Zone from Sept. 5-13, resident geese and teal are both open, and the special methods are not allowed.
| Season | Shooting Hours | Shotgun Plug | Electronic Calls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Resident Canada Goose (special methods) | 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset | Not required | Allowed |
| Resident Canada Goose (teal overlap, Sept. 5-13 inside zone) | Standard hours | Required | Not allowed |
| Regular Goose Seasons | 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset | Required (3 shells) | Not allowed |
| Snow Goose Conservation Order | 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset | Not required | Allowed |
Conservation order rules have followed the same pattern for years. Hunters could use unplugged shotguns and electronic callers, and legal shooting hours were extended to 30 minutes after sunset. Those methods apply only to snow geese, not to Canada geese or brant.
State wildlife areas can add their own limits on hours, sign-in, and access, so read posted rules at the check station. Delaware’s hunting scene is also growing in other directions, and our deer hunting season in New Jersey page may help if you’re crossing the bay for a combined trip. For hunters headed to the Midwest flyway, the Illinois goose hunting season page lays out a different set of splits and zones.
Plan your season around the Sept. 1 resident opener, the Thanksgiving-week migratory window, and the late-winter snow goose dates. Check Delaware’s migratory bird hunting regulations and the DNREC guide for the final numbers before each trip.
