Utah deer hunting season in 2026-27 starts in mid-August and runs into the winter, but most hunters build their year around one nine-day window. The general-season any-legal-weapon buck hunt runs October 17-25, 2026. Archery opens first, muzzleloader follows in late September, and extended archery stretches into November on select units.

This guide gives you the dates by weapon, the bag limit, the permit rules, and the on-the-ground requirements for tagging and transport. Utah handles big game differently from most states, so you apply for your permit months before you ever load a pack. Read the permit section before anything else.

Deer Hunting Season Dates in Utah 2026-27

Utah’s season is layered: archery, then muzzleloader, then rifle, with extended and late hunts on top. The table below covers the general-season buck deer hunts. Limited-entry and premium units follow their own unit-specific dates.

Hunt2026 Dates
General-season archery buck deerAug. 15 – Sept. 11
General-season muzzleloader buck deerSept. 23 – Oct. 1
Early any legal weapon (specific units only)Oct. 7 – 11
General-season any legal weapon (rifle)Oct. 17 – 25
HAMSS (handgun, archery, muzzleloader, shotgun, straight-walled rifle)Nov. 7 – 30

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources news release, republished by TownLift, lists the general-season archery buck deer hunt as Aug. 15 to Sept. 11 and the any-legal-weapon buck hunt as Oct. 17 to 25. The HuntWise Utah guide adds the early any-legal-weapon and HAMSS windows.

Some sites list slightly different archery start dates, such as August 16, because limited-entry hunts and some guides use different calendars. Use August 15 for general-season archery.

Archery and Crossbow Deer Season in Utah

Archery gives you the longest runway. The general-season archery buck hunt covers August 15 to September 11, 2026 on general-season units, and it opens months before any rifle hunter is in the field.

Extended archery adds time on select units. According to HuntWise, extended either-sex hunts run September 12 to October 15 in Nine Mile, Green River Valley, Sanpete Valley, and South Wasatch. A second group of units runs September 12 to November 30: Box Elder, West Bear River, Herriman South Valley, Ogden, Uintah Basin, Utah Lake, Wasatch Front, and West Cache.

To hunt the extended areas, you need an archery permit and must complete the extended archery ethics course, per Hunting Locator. Crossbow eligibility is set by the Utah DWR guidebook, so check the current weapon rules before you assume a crossbow qualifies for an archery permit.

Pro Tip: Extended archery units are mostly near the Wasatch Front and urban edges. That means more private land and more access questions, so scout boundaries early.

Muzzleloader Deer Season in Utah

The general-season muzzleloader buck hunt runs September 23 to October 1, 2026, a nine-day hunt that falls between archery and rifle. Late muzzleloader hunts are limited-entry: October 28 to November 5 on general-season units, with separate November windows for Cache and Crawford Mountain, and Dolores Triangle (HuntWise).

If you want rifle-season conditions with fewer people in the woods, the muzzleloader hunt is the best fit. The tradeoff is range, so practice at 100 yards or less before opening day.

Firearm Deer Season in Utah (Rifle and Shotgun)

The general-season any-legal-weapon (rifle) buck hunt runs October 17-25, 2026. A shorter early any-legal-weapon hunt, October 7-11, applies to specific units only, per HuntWise.

Shotgun hunters get a separate window. HAMSS, the handgun-archery-muzzleloader-shotgun-straight-walled-rifle hunt, runs November 7 to 30, 2026. It is a good late option if you prefer shorter-range firearms.

Restricted rifle hunts share the October 17-25 dates. A Hunting Locator deer guide calls the general any-weapon hunt the most realistic path to a Utah buck for resident and nonresident hunters alike.

Youth and Disabled Hunter Deer Seasons in Utah

Youth hunters get extra time in the field. Youth holders of eligible any-legal-weapon or restricted-rifle permits may hunt all general deer seasons on their unit, including archery, muzzleloader, and rifle windows, according to HuntingSeasons.org.

Age cutoffs, hunter education requirements, and any disabled-hunter permit options are set in the Utah DWR guidebook. Contact the division before applying if you plan to hunt under one of those provisions.

Antlerless, Late and Holiday Deer Seasons in Utah

Antlerless hunts are permit-only and vary by unit. Per Huntin’ Fool, antlerless applications ran June 9-23, 2026, and the bag limit is one antlerless deer per permit.

Late opportunities include the limited-entry late muzzleloader hunts in late October and November, and the HAMSS hunt through November 30. Extended archery on Wasatch Front units also runs to November 30, so you can still hunt after most seasons have closed elsewhere.

Utah does not run a traditional holiday deer season in December for general-season hunters. The Dolores Triangle muzzleloader hunt, which ends December 1, is the latest general hunt window listed by HuntWise.

Utah Deer Hunting Zones, Units and Counties

Utah manages deer by hunt unit rather than by county. According to World Deer, the state has 31 general-season buck units, and the Utah Wildlife Board approved 86,625 general-season buck permits for 2026, up 6,425 from 2025.

Limited-entry units are far more selective. The same source reports 1,708 limited-entry deer permits for 2026. Top limited-entry names include the Henry Mountains, Paunsaugunt Plateau, and Book Cliffs, per HuntWise, and you need a drawn permit to hunt them.

Deer Bag Limits in Utah

The limit is simple: one buck per permit in the general-season archery, muzzleloader, any-legal-weapon, and HAMSS seasons. According to Utah eRegulations, extended archery allows one either-sex deer, the cactus buck season allows one cactus buck, and antlerless hunts allow one antlerless deer per permit.

You can hold only one buck deer permit per year. Drawing a limited-entry tag removes you from the general-season pool, per Hunting Locator.

Antler Point Restrictions and Buck Rules in Utah

General-season hunts are for bucks, and the legal definition of a buck is set by the guidebook for your permit type. The type of permit you draw determines which bucks you can harvest, as noted by our Utah hunting laws overview.

Some units carry antler restrictions, such as a forked-antler requirement. Read your unit’s entry in the Utah DWR guidebook before opening day, because a legal buck in one unit can be illegal in the next.

Deer Hunting License, Tag and Permit Requirements in Utah

Utah uses a draw for big game, and that includes general-season deer. You need a hunting license to apply and a permit to hunt, and Hunting Locator explains the difference clearly: the license lets you apply and hunt, while the permit authorizes a deer in a specific unit and season.

Timing matters. A Hunting Locator guide lists the limited-entry application deadline as April 23, 2026. World Deer reports that leftover permits went on sale July 7, 2026. For 2027, expect a similar spring application window and watch the Utah DWR for exact dates.

  1. Buy a Utah hunting or combination license.
  2. Apply for a deer permit in the spring draw.
  3. Pick up any leftover permits when they go on sale in July.
  4. Complete any required courses, such as the extended archery ethics course.

Pro Tip: Limited-entry permits are drawn before general-season permits. If you apply for both and draw limited-entry, you will not be in the general-season draw.

Nonresident Deer Hunting in Utah

Nonresidents can hunt Utah deer, but they pay more. World Deer lists 2026 license costs of $144 for a nonresident hunting license and $190 for a combination license, against $40 and $44 for residents. Fish and Game Guide lists the nonresident deer permit at $500.

Fee schedules change, and Huntin’ Fool and the Utah DWR both publish current nonresident fees. Confirm the final total on the division’s site before you apply.

Nonresidents compete in the same draw, and the general any-weapon hunt is usually the most realistic option.

Where to Hunt Deer in Utah: Public and Private Land

Public land is plentiful in Utah, and the top mule deer units include several famous names. Beyond the limited-entry units, general-season hunters typically work national forest and Bureau of Land Management ground.

On private land, you need landowner permission. Beginning July 1, 2026, adults entering certain wildlife management areas in Davis, Salt Lake, Utah, and Weber counties need a valid license or a free digital access permit, according to hunting access reporting summarized in search results.

Hunting Deer on Your Own Property in Utah

Owning land does not remove the permit requirement. You still need a valid license and a deer permit for the unit your property sits in, and your harvest counts against your one-buck limit.

Landowner-related programs and cooperative wildlife management units have their own rules. Ask the Utah DWR which, if any, applies to your acreage.

Blaze Orange, Shooting Hours and Legal Methods in Utah

Hunter orange is required while hunting big game, and it must be visible on the exterior of your clothing, according to HuntingSeasons.org. Wear it for every firearm hunt, and confirm the exact requirement for your weapon type in the guidebook.

Legal methods follow the hunt you drew: archery, muzzleloader, any legal weapon, or HAMSS. Stick to the weapon your permit allows, because a rifle in a muzzleloader hunt is a violation. Shooting hours are published in the Utah DWR guidebook by date, so check the table for your hunt week.

Sunday Deer Hunting in Utah

Sunday hunting is allowed in Utah on public land, per World Deer’s summary of the 2026 Field Regulations Guidebook. That gives you a full nine days in the rifle hunt, including the weekend that falls inside October 17-25.

Private property rules are set by the landowner, so get permission that covers Sundays.

Chronic Wasting Disease Rules for Deer Hunters in Utah

Chronic wasting disease is present in Utah. World Deer cites 435 mule deer and 11 elk positives as of 2026 in Utah’s testing data.

The Utah DWR publishes CWD testing options, carcass transport restrictions, and any unit-specific rules. If you hunt out of state or bring a carcass in from elsewhere, check the division’s rules before you transport anything.

  • Do not eat meat from a deer that looks sick.
  • Wear gloves when field dressing.
  • Consider testing, especially in units with known positives.

Deer Harvest Reporting, Tagging and Transport in Utah

Tag your deer immediately, before moving it from the kill site, per HuntingSeasons.org. World Deer adds that Utah requires tagging and evidence of sex, with e-tags available through the app.

All harvested deer must be tagged and checked through the official system, and failing the check-in requirement is treated as a separate violation, according to our Utah hunting laws page.

Keep your tag with the carcass during transport, and follow the division’s reporting window after your hunt.

Best Time to Hunt Deer in Utah

The rut peaks around mid-November, which is after the general rifle hunt closes. For that reason, the best days for most hunters are the opening mornings of the October 17-25 hunt, when bucks are still moving and pressure is lightest.

If you want rut activity, extended archery on Wasatch Front units and the November HAMSS hunt are your options. For earlier action, archery in late August and September gives you bachelor-group bucks at higher elevations.
