Goose Hunting Season in Utah: 2026-27 Dates, Bag Limits, and Permits
October 29, 2026
Goose hunting season in Utah is one of the longest in the West. Dark goose seasons open in early October and run into February in some areas, and light goose hunting continues into March.
That long calendar comes with a catch. Utah splits its goose seasons across four goose areas, and each area has its own dates, closures, and rules.
This article covers the 2026-27 dates, species rules, bag limits, spring light goose hunting, licenses, and legal gear so you know what applies to your hunt.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Utah
Utah divides goose hunting into four goose areas: Eastern Box Elder, Northern, Southern, and Wasatch Front. The tables in the 2026-27 Utah Waterfowl, Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook are a quick reference, and the guidebook points you to its detailed pages for exact dates, areas, and limits.
| Goose Area | Dark and White-Fronted Geese | Light Geese |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern Box Elder | Oct. 3, 2026 – Jan. 16, 2027 | Oct. 15 – Dec. 22, 2026 and Feb. 1 – Mar. 10, 2027 |
| Northern | Oct. 3 – 10, 2026 and Oct. 26, 2026 – Jan. 31, 2027 | Oct. 15 – Dec. 22, 2026 and Feb. 1 – Mar. 10, 2027 |
| Wasatch Front | Oct. 3 – 10, 2026 and Nov. 10, 2026 – Feb. 15, 2027 | Oct. 15 – Dec. 22, 2026 and Feb. 1 – Mar. 10, 2027 |
| Southern | Oct. 10, 2026 – Jan. 23, 2027 | Oct. 26 – Dec. 15, 2026 and Jan. 15 – Mar. 10, 2027 |
The guidebook defines dark geese as any cackling, Canada, or brant goose, and light geese as snow, blue, or Ross’s geese. The Mid-Utah Radio rundown of the 2026 season lists the same area dates. You can compare them in its 2026 waterfowl season summary.
Timing matters if you’re hunting in mid-October. The Northern and Wasatch Front areas close to dark geese after Oct. 10, and the Northern area reopens Oct. 26 while the Wasatch Front area reopens Nov. 10. The Southern and Eastern Box Elder areas stay open straight through.
Pro Tip: Youth hunters have a head start. The Northern Zone youth hunt is Saturday, Sept. 19, and the Southern Zone youth hunt is Saturday, Sept. 26. Bear River and Ouray refuges fall in the Northern Zone, and Fish Springs falls in the Southern Zone.
If you also chase ducks on the same trips, the Utah duck hunting laws page covers zones and limits for those birds.
Canada Goose Season in Utah
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the bread-and-butter bird for most Utah goose hunters. They fall under the dark goose rules, which means they share the same season dates and daily limit as cackling geese and brant.
Pacific Flyway numbers have been healthy. According to the Herald Extra’s 2025 season preview, Canada goose numbers stayed strong in the flyway and migrators typically arrive in mid-to-late November. That outlook is from last year, so treat it as a pattern rather than a 2026 forecast.
For 2026-27, you have four ways to plan around the dark goose dates:
- Early season (Oct. 3 – 10): Northern, Wasatch Front, and Eastern Box Elder areas are open, and you’ll mostly target local resident birds.
- Mid-October gap: The Northern and Wasatch Front areas are closed, so shift to the Southern or Eastern Box Elder areas if you want to keep hunting.
- Late fall: The Northern area reopens Oct. 26 and the Wasatch Front area reopens Nov. 10, just as migrating flocks arrive.
- Winter: Most areas hold through late January, and the Wasatch Front area runs to Feb. 15, 2027.
Geese are social birds, so a good call and a realistic decoy spread make a real difference, especially over agricultural fields and near the Great Salt Lake marshes. Scout the field the day before so you know where birds are feeding.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Utah
Four species outside the Canada goose get their own rules here. Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are light geese. Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) share the dark goose dates but have a separate daily limit. Brant (Branta bernicla) are counted as dark geese, so they follow the dark goose season and limit.
Light Geese: Snow and Ross’s
Light goose hunting starts later than dark geese and finishes later in the spring. The Eastern Box Elder, Northern, and Wasatch Front areas run Oct. 15 – Dec. 22, 2026 and Feb. 1 – Mar. 10, 2027. The Southern area runs Oct. 26 – Dec. 15, 2026 and Jan. 15 – Mar. 10, 2027.
Most light goose hunting takes place on private property, so you need documented permission from landowners before you hunt. Snow goose numbers have also slipped slightly in the Pacific Flyway over the last few years, according to the 2025 season report.
White-Fronted Geese and Brant
White-fronted geese are hunted during the dark goose dates in each area. The 2026-27 guidebook flags a change: the white-fronted goose bag limit decreased from 10 birds to 6. If you hunted Utah last season under the 10-bird limit, update your expectations before opening day.
Brant are rare in Utah compared with Canada geese, but they count toward your dark goose limit if you take one. Identify your target before you shoot, since a flock of mixed species is common over water.
Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Utah
Utah sets separate limits for dark geese and white-fronted geese. The possession limit is three times the daily bag for both groups.
| Goose Group | Daily Bag Limit | Possession Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Dark geese (cackling, Canada, brant) | 5 | 15 |
| White-fronted geese | 6 | 18 |
| Light geese (snow, blue, Ross’s) | See the goose section of the guidebook | |
The Blindbook Utah season summary lists dark geese at 5 per day and 15 in possession, and white-fronted geese at 6 per day and 18 in possession. The state guidebook confirms the white-fronted reduction to 6 birds. I did not find a verified light goose limit in my research, so check the guidebook for that number before you head out.
Important Note: Third-party season summaries sometimes mark individual entries as unconfirmed. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources guidebook is the legal authority, and the Mid-Utah Radio report notes that page 65 of the guidebook holds goose area boundaries and bag limits.
Possession limits cover birds in your freezer and vehicle, not just your daily take. If you leave a limit of birds at home and come back for a second trip, count what you already have.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Utah
Light goose populations are overabundant across much of North America, which is why wildlife agencies push for extended spring opportunities. In Utah, that shows up as a late split rather than a separate stand-alone program, based on what I found in the 2026-27 season tables.
The Eastern Box Elder, Northern, and Wasatch Front areas reopen to light geese Feb. 1, 2027 and close Mar. 10, 2027. The Southern area reopens Jan. 15 and also closes Mar. 10, 2027. A hunting-industry guide also notes that special conservation orders may extend the season for snow geese to manage their populations.
Important Note: I could not find a separate 2027 Utah conservation order document in my research. The late light goose dates above come from the guidebook’s regular season table. Read the guidebook’s light goose notes in early 2027 for any added rules on methods, areas, or closures.
Late-winter light goose hunting rewards scouting. Birds follow open water and fresh fields, and because most of that land is private, line up written landowner permission well before February.
The same planning mindset applies to Utah’s other game species. Our pages on dove hunting season in Utah and turkey hunting season in Utah cover the spring and early fall calendar.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Utah
You need a short list of items before you can legally hunt geese in Utah. Gather them in this order so nothing slips past you on opening weekend:
- Hunter education: Huntwise’s Utah overview (March 2025) says anyone born after December 31, 1965 must pass an approved hunter education course.
- Utah hunting license: Buy a valid Utah hunting license through the DWR or a license agent.
- HIP registration: The 2026-27 guidebook includes an online Harvest Information Program registration process for migratory game bird hunters.
- Federal duck stamp: Anyone 16 and older must carry a federal migratory bird hunting and conservation stamp, and both physical and electronic versions are valid.
- Landowner permission: Carry documented permission any time you hunt private ground.
As of the 2024 season, the electronic duck stamp is valid for the entire season and can be downloaded alongside your other licenses in the Utah Hunting and Fishing mobile app. Confirm the same convenience applies this year when you buy.
Youth hunters who are 17 or younger on July 31, 2026 can take part in Utah’s youth waterfowl hunts. Fees change year to year, so check the DWR license page for current prices instead of relying on a number from last season.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Utah
Federal migratory bird rules set the baseline: shooting starts one half hour before sunrise and ends at sunset. Utah’s guidebook gives the local details, so confirm hours against it each season, especially on refuges and waterfowl management areas that may add their own restrictions.
Legal gear is simple, but the shot type is where hunters get cited. Lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl hunting nationwide, and most Utah hunters use 12-gauge shotguns with 3-inch or 3.5-inch steel shot. The Gunvera Utah seasons overview notes that loads like BBB or T are popular for geese.
- Use nontoxic shot only, and check that any shells in your vest are steel or another approved nontoxic type.
- Keep your shotgun plugged to hold no more than three shells total, as federal rules require for migratory birds.
- Stay out of areas closed to goose hunting on a given date, including the Northern area’s mid-October closure.
- Check refuge and management area rules before you set decoys, since access rules differ by site.
Pro Tip: Photograph the boundary map for your goose area and save it to your phone. Zone and area lines are easy to misread when you’re walking in before dawn.
Do your homework on dates, limits, licenses, and shot type, and Utah’s long goose calendar becomes a real advantage. If you also hunt big game in the state, our page on bear hunting season in Utah helps you line up the rest of your fall.
