Arkansas Deer Season Opens Nov. 14: Gun Dates, Limits and Antler Rules
November 7, 2026
Deer hunting season in Arkansas 2026-27 stretches across six months, and the gun window is the shortest part of it. Modern gun opens November 14 in every zone, but closing dates vary widely by zone, so the zone you hunt decides how many days you actually get.
Archery is the longest opportunity. Alternative firearms, youth hunts and a three-day holiday hunt fill in the gaps.
This guide covers season dates, bag limits, antler rules, licensing, CWD restrictions and timing, so you can plan your hunt around the rules the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) publishes. The AGFC zone page is the controlling reference for exact dates in your zone.
Deer Hunting Season Dates in Arkansas 2026-27
Arkansas splits deer hunting into early buck-only archery, regular archery, alternative firearms, youth modern gun, modern gun and a holiday gun hunt. The AGFC deer seasons and limits page lists the 2026-27 dates zone by zone.
The statewide framework, as summarized by Hunter Almanac, looks like this:
| Season | Dates |
|---|---|
| Early buck-only archery | Aug. 29-31, 2026 |
| Regular archery | Sept. 26, 2026-Feb. 28, 2027 |
| Alternative firearms (first segment) | Oct. 17-25, 2026 |
| Youth modern gun | Nov. 7-8, 2026 and Jan. 2-3, 2027 |
| Modern gun | Opens Nov. 14, 2026; closing dates vary by zone |
| Holiday modern gun | Dec. 26-28, 2026 in most zones |
Pro Tip: Print the AGFC zone table for your zone and keep it in your pack. Closing dates for modern gun differ by up to several weeks between neighboring zones.
Archery and Crossbow Deer Season in Arkansas
Bowhunters get the most time afield. HuntingSeason.com lists archery deer season as running September 26, 2026 through February 28, 2027, with an early buck-only window on August 29-31 before it.
Archery season covers bows and crossbows. Under the AGFC zone bag limit, you can take up to four antlerless deer with archery, while the combined limit across all methods stays at four deer with no more than two antlered bucks.
The early buck-only hunt is a three-day window for bucks only, so antlerless deer are off the table during those days.
Muzzleloader Deer Season in Arkansas
Arkansas no longer calls this a muzzleloader season. The AGFC term is alternative firearms, and the first segment runs October 17-25, 2026 in every zone that has one, according to HuntDates.
A second segment depends on your zone. Zones 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 have December 12-14, zones 4A, 5A, 14 and 15 have December 19-21, and zones 9, 12, 13, 16, 16A and 17 get the October segment only. Alternative firearms are closed in zones 4 and 5.
Under the AGFC bag limit, alternative firearms and modern gun share a combined limit of three antlerless deer.
Firearm Deer Season in Arkansas (Rifle and Shotgun)
Modern gun season opens November 14, 2026 in every zone, per HuntingSeason.com. After that, the zones go their own way.
| Zones | Modern Gun Dates |
|---|---|
| 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 | Nov. 14-Dec. 6; Dec. 26-28 |
| 4 and 5 | Nov. 14-22; Dec. 26-28 |
| 4A, 5A, 14, 15 | Nov. 14-Dec. 13; Dec. 26-28 |
| 9, 12, 13 | Nov. 14-Dec. 20; Dec. 26-28 |
| 16, 16A, 17 | Nov. 14-Dec. 28 |
These dates are compiled from HuntDates, which summarizes the AGFC regulations. Verify your zone against the AGFC page before you head out.
Youth and Disabled Hunter Deer Seasons in Arkansas
The youth modern gun hunt runs November 7-8, 2026 and January 2-3, 2027. According to Fish & Game Guide, only hunters ages 6 to 15 may take deer with a gun during this hunt, and they need the free Youth Game Tags. Youths may take any buck, with no antler-point rules.
Normal zone limits still apply, and public land hunters should check individual WMA listings for exceptions. An adult must supervise the young hunter under AGFC youth rules.
Hunters with disabilities should contact the AGFC for current permit and accommodation details, since eligibility rules are set by the commission.
Antlerless, Late and Holiday Deer Seasons in Arkansas
Antlerless deer can be taken during archery, alternative firearms and modern gun seasons, subject to zone limits. The AGFC bag limit allows four antlerless deer with archery, and three with alternative firearms and modern gun combined.
The holiday hunt is the main late gun opportunity. Most zones reopen modern gun December 26-28, 2026, while zones 16, 16A and 17 run continuously through December 28. The late youth hunt on January 2-3, 2027 and archery through February 28 round out the late season.
Zone 2 is stricter on antlerless archery deer, with a lower antlerless limit than other zones, per Fish & Game Guide.
Arkansas Deer Hunting Zones, Units and Counties
Arkansas divides the state into numbered deer zones, including lettered subzones such as 4A, 5A and 16A. Each zone has its own modern gun closing date and alternative firearms schedule.
The AGFC publishes a 2026-27 deer zone map showing which counties fall in each zone. Check it before you buy land access or book a camp, because a short drive across a zone line can change your season by weeks.
Each WMA is also treated as its own zone with its own antler rules, as noted in the AGFC hunting guidebook summarized by Fish & Game Guide.
Deer Bag Limits in Arkansas
The zone bag limit is four deer, with no more than two antlered bucks, according to the AGFC. Within that, you can take:
- Two antlered bucks with archery, alternative firearms or modern gun
- Four antlerless deer with archery
- Three antlerless deer with alternative firearms and modern gun combined
Hunters can take up to six deer per season statewide, with no more than two antlered bucks, per Fish & Game Guide. WMAs are capped at three deer, with no more than two bucks.
Pro Tip: Button bucks count as antlerless deer under the 2026-27 rules, so a button buck uses an antlerless tag.
Antler Point Restrictions and Buck Rules in Arkansas
Outside the CWD Management Zone, legal bucks must be button bucks or have at least three points on one side of the rack, according to the AGFC. Inside the CWD Management Zone, there are no antler restrictions.
Count points on a single side before you squeeze the trigger. A rack with three points on one side qualifies even if the other side is a spike.
WMAs set their own antler rules, so read the specific area listing in the hunting guidebook before hunting public ground. Youth hunters are exempt from antler-point rules during the youth gun hunt.
Deer Hunting License, Tag and Permit Requirements in Arkansas
Arkansas deer hunters need a hunting license and the appropriate deer permit for the season they hunt. Youth hunters taking deer with a gun on the youth hunt need the free Youth Game Tags.
New for 2026-27, hunters 16 and older without a hunting or fishing license need a $10.50 WMA/Lake Conservation Permit to use AGFC-owned WMAs, according to Fish & Game Guide. Licensed hunters do not need it.
Current license prices are listed through the AGFC licensing page, where you can also buy online.
Nonresident Deer Hunting in Arkansas
Nonresidents can hunt deer in Arkansas with the appropriate nonresident hunting license and deer permit. Season dates, zone limits and antler rules are the same as for residents.
If you travel from out of state, bring your own CWD plan. Carcass transport rules apply when you take a deer out of the CWD Management Zone or across state lines, so check the AGFC CWD page before you leave camp.
Where to Hunt Deer in Arkansas: Public and Private Land
Public land hunting centers on WMAs, each with its own rules. WMA deer bag limits are standardized at three deer with no more than two antlered bucks, and the WMA listings in the guidebook note any exceptions to youth hunt dates.
GPS collars are now required for hunting dogs pursuing deer, fox and coyote on public land, per AskHunting. Zones 1 and 2 are no-dog zones.
Private land offers the standard four-deer zone limit. The state spans everything from the Ozarks to the Delta, so terrain, deer density and pressure change sharply between zones.
Hunting Deer on Your Own Property in Arkansas
Landowners still follow season dates, bag limits and tagging rules on their own property. Owning the land does not exempt you from the zone limit or the check-in requirement.
If you hunt private land in the CWD Management Zone, baiting rules differ. Per Fish & Game Guide, inside the CWD Management Zone deer may be hunted over bait only on private land during a set window, so confirm the dates on the AGFC site.
Hunters on leased land should check lease terms and the zone map together.
Blaze Orange, Shooting Hours and Legal Methods in Arkansas
Legal hunting time is the period from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Hunter Almanac notes that the code defines night as the time from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise.
Legal methods match the season. Bows and crossbows are legal for every archer during archery season, alternative firearms season allows muzzleloaders and straight-wall cartridge guns, and modern gun season allows rifles and shotguns.
Wear blaze orange during gun seasons as the AGFC hunting guidebook requires, and check the guidebook for exact color and coverage specifications.
Sunday Deer Hunting in Arkansas
Arkansas does not have a blanket Sunday hunting ban on deer, and many season dates fall on weekends. The 2026-27 opener on November 14 is a Saturday, and the youth hunt on November 7-8 covers a full weekend.
Some public lands set their own closures, so check WMA listings if you plan a Sunday hunt on public ground.
Chronic Wasting Disease Rules for Deer Hunters in Arkansas
Arkansas runs a CWD Management Zone, and the rules inside it differ from the rest of the state. The AGFC lists no antler restrictions inside the zone, which is meant to encourage harvest of more deer.
Baiting is allowed on private land inside the CWD Management Zone during a limited window, according to Fish & Game Guide. Elsewhere, standard baiting rules apply.
Pro Tip: If you hunt near the zone boundary, review the AGFC CWD map before you hang a stand. Carcass transport and testing rules can change depending on which side you tag a deer.
Deer Harvest Reporting, Tagging and Transport in Arkansas
Every deer must be checked, and Fish & Game Guide reports that the check-in window is 12 hours. Check the AGFC site for the current method, which includes online and mobile options.
Tag the deer before moving it, and keep the tag information with the carcass during transport. Taking deer out of a CWD zone carries added carcass rules, so only move approved parts.
Your harvest counts against the zone and season limits, which is why accurate reporting matters for both you and the state’s management data.
Best Time to Hunt Deer in Arkansas
The rut is the peak for most hunters. Gun season opening November 14 lines up with active rutting movement in much of the state, which is why zone closing dates matter so much for planning.
Archery hunters in October and early November can hunt before gun pressure arrives. Late-season archery through February also catches post-rut feeding patterns when deer concentrate near food.
