Legal Bow Types and Equipment Requirements in New York

Crossbow Rules in New York

The 2025 hunting season marked a landmark shift in New York crossbow law. Governor Kathy Hochul signed Senate Bill S6360A into law, officially expanding crossbow hunting opportunities across the state. Current crossbow equipment specifications (effective fall 2025):

• Must have a working trigger safety
• Minimum peak draw weight of 100 pounds

• No maximum draw weight restriction

A legal crossbow consists of a bow and string, either compound or recurve, mounted upon a stock with a trigger that holds the string and limbs under tension until released. The trigger unit of such crossbow must have a working safety.

License and privilege requirements for crossbow hunters: To hunt deer and bear with a crossbow during the bowhunting seasons, a hunter must have a hunting license and bowhunting privilege. To be eligible to purchase a bowhunting privilege, a hunter must have bowhunter education certification. To hunt deer and bear with a crossbow during the regular (firearm) season, you need a hunting license and bowhunter education certification; you do not need a bowhunting privilege.

Age requirements for crossbow use:

• Hunters age 14 and up with a valid hunting license and bowhunting privilege may use a crossbow anywhere a longbow is permitted.
• Hunters ages 12 and 13 that have a valid hunting license and bowhunting privilege may hunt deer with a crossbow only in those counties that have passed a local law allowing such hunters to do so.

Important Note: Big game hunters are required to take the NYS Bowhunter Education course to hunt deer or bear with a crossbow, regardless of past crossbow certification of qualification. The former Crossbow Certificate of Qualification is no longer valid for this purpose.

Discharge setback distances for crossbows:

• Westchester and Suffolk counties: minimum 500-foot setback from homes and structures
• All other counties where deer and bear hunting are permitted: minimum 250-foot setback

Species You Can Hunt with a Bow in New York

1. Complete hunter education — required for all first-time hunters before purchasing a license
2. Complete bowhunter education — required to purchase the bowhunting privilege for deer and bear
3. Purchase a New York State hunting license — required for anyone 12 years and older using a bow to hunt or take wild game; this license is required before other privileges such as bowhunting can be purchased
4. Add the bowhunting privilege — required for bow seasons (vertical bow or crossbow); bowhunter education is required
5. Obtain your tags — tags are issued with your license and privilege purchase

Residents and non-residents must purchase a hunting license to be eligible for bowhunting and muzzleloading privileges. If you purchase both bowhunting and muzzleloading privileges, you will receive one Bow/Mz Either Sex Deer Tag and one Bow/Mz Antlerless Deer Tag. Bowhunter Education Requirements in New York

After successful completion, students will receive a Bowhunter Education Certificate of Qualification, which is required in addition to a hunting license or hunter education certificate for purchasing a first-time bowhunting privilege.

Pro Tip: Most bowhunter education courses are offered between March and September. All in-person courses are free. Do not wait until just before the hunting season to take a class — in-person courses fill quickly, so it is important to sign up early.

An online bowhunter education course is also available for New York residents. You must be at least 11 years old to take the online course, and you must be a resident of New York. All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory bowhunter education requirements will accept the New York Bowhunter Education Certificate of Qualification. Likewise, New York will accept bowhunter education certifications issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements.

If you previously held a Crossbow Certificate of Qualification, note that it is no longer valid. Big game hunters are required to take the NYS Bowhunter Education course to hunt deer or bear with a crossbow, regardless of past crossbow certification of qualification.

Land and Safety Restrictions for Bow Hunting in New York

Even with the right license and equipment, where and how you shoot matters under New York law. The state sets firm discharge setback distances, prohibits hunting in certain locations, and enforces treestand safety standards that every bowhunter should know.

Discharge setback distances for bows:

• Bow: must not discharge within 150 feet of a dwelling, farm building, or structure in occupation or use (unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate family member, an employee, or have the owner’s consent)
• Crossbow: 250 feet (except 500 feet in Suffolk and Westchester Counties)
• Firearm: 500 feet

The discharge of a bow within 150 feet, crossbow within 250 feet, or a firearm within 500 feet of a factory or church is prohibited only when such building is occupied at the time of discharge.

Treestand safety:

In 2025, 9 elevated hunting incidents were reported, and one was fatal. The hunter involved in the fatal incident was not wearing a harness that was attached to a tree. Treestand safety is integrated into DEC’s hunter education course because these incidents have become the leading cause of hunting-related injuries — the proper use of treestands and treestand safety equipment will help prevent these injuries and fatalities.

Important Note: Always wear a full-body harness when hunting from an elevated position. Attach yourself to the tree before leaving the ground and remain attached until you return to the ground. Never climb with a loaded or cocked crossbow.

Transporting your bow and crossbow: A person may not transport or possess a crossbow in or on a motor vehicle unless the crossbow is unloaded or taken down. Vertical bows do not carry the same statutory transport restriction, but safe and responsible transport is always expected.

Additional restrictions to know:

• Hunting with bait is prohibited for big game, turkey, upland game birds, and waterfowl
• Hunting deer and bear is prohibited in certain locations, including the Erie County Buffalo area, portions of Herkimer and Hamilton counties, Nassau County, and New York City.
• Backtags are no longer required for hunting anywhere in New York State.
• Blaze orange or fluorescent pink is not required during archery-only seasons, but when hunting deer or bear with a firearm, New York requires at least 250 square inches of solid or patterned fluorescent orange or pink material above the waist and visible from all directions.

Hunting contest restrictions:

A law makes it unlawful for any person to organize, sponsor, conduct, promote, or participate in any contest, competition, tournament, or derby with the objective of taking or hunting wildlife for prizes, inducement, or entertainment.
