What Are Spots?

Spots are pigmented regions of a different color from the surrounding area on an animal’s skin or coat. They can be tiny dots or bigger irregular shapes.

Spots may have evolved as a camouflage mechanism, mate-attractive feature, or signal of superiority to other species.

Environmental conditions or genetic mutations may also cause them. Many species have spots, including household dogs, insects, and large cats like leopards.
