Goose Hunting Season in Arkansas: 2026-27 Dates, Limits, and Licenses
October 19, 2026
Arkansas’s early Canada goose segment runs September 1 through October 15, so if you’re reading this on October 11, 2026, you have a few days left to hunt it. Most hunters wait for the bigger migration, though. That is when the rice fields around Stuttgart and the Grand Prairie fill with birds.
Goose hunting season in Arkansas is split into several segments, each with its own species, limits, and rules. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission (AGFC) approved the 2026-27 and 2027-28 waterfowl dates at its April 2026 meeting. The agency has also made at least one change this year that affects spring goose hunters.
Below you’ll find the dates, species rules, bag limits, licensing requirements, and shooting hours for the 2026-27 season. Use it to plan your hunts, then check the AGFC guidebook before you head out.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Arkansas
Arkansas splits its goose seasons into segments that line up with the duck season splits. The table below uses the dates AGFC published for 2026-27.
| Season | 2026-27 Dates |
|---|---|
| Canada Goose | Sept. 1-Oct. 15, Nov. 21-29, Dec. 10-23, and Dec. 26, 2026-Jan. 31, 2027 |
| White-Fronted Goose | Oct. 31-Nov. 8, Nov. 21-29, Dec. 10-23, and Dec. 26, 2026-Jan. 31, 2027 |
| Snow, Blue, and Ross’s Goose | Oct. 31-Nov. 8, Nov. 21-29, Dec. 10-23, and Dec. 26, 2026-Jan. 31, 2027 |
| Light Goose Conservation Order | Feb. 1-5, 2027, and Feb. 8-April 25, 2027 |
| Veteran, Active-Duty Military, and Youth Hunt | Feb. 6-7, 2027 |
These dates match the corrected list on the AGFC site. You can confirm them on the AGFC waterfowl regulations page.
Important Note: AGFC says the July/August issue of Arkansas Wildlife magazine and a mailer sent with some duck stamps listed the first segment as closing Dec. 1. It actually closes Nov. 29. If you saved dates from either publication, fix them. The AGFC correction notice has the right ones.
Planning ahead for next year? The 2027-28 seasons will use the same timing as 2026-27, with only small calendar-creep adjustments so the dates fall on the same days of the week. Hunters who also chase doves, deer, or turkey can see how those seasons stack up in our guides to dove hunting season in Arkansas and deer hunting season in Arkansas.
Canada Goose Season in Arkansas
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the only goose with a September season in Arkansas. They show up in smaller numbers than snows and specklebellies and often mix into other flocks. That makes them a bonus bird for most Arkansas goose hunters, not the main target.
The early segment runs September 1 through October 15, 2026. AGFC lists a daily bag limit of 5 and a possession limit of 15 for that early segment. After that, Canada goose season reopens with the same three segments as the duck season: November 21-29, December 10-23, and December 26 through January 31, 2027.
Arkansas sits on the Mississippi Flyway. That position makes it one of the top duck and goose destinations in the country. If you’re curious how Canada-heavy states to the north compare, our guides to goose hunting season in Illinois and goose hunting season in Iowa cover those seasons.
Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Arkansas
Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), which hunters call specklebellies, make up most of the Arkansas goose harvest. Snow geese are known for their huge flocks, and specklebellies are prized for their calls and patterned plumage. Blue geese are a dark color morph of the snow goose, so they share the same season and limits.
Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are smaller look-alikes that travel in snow goose flocks. All three species open October 31 and close November 8 for the first segment. They then follow the November, December, and January segments. The opening segment is short, but it can be good when early cold fronts push birds south.
Brant (Branta bernicla) are a different story. AGFC’s published 2026-27 season list has no brant season, so treat brant as off-limits in Arkansas. If one lands in your spread, let it go and confirm the rule in the current guidebook.
Hunters tend to find the most birds in these areas:
- The Stuttgart and Grand Prairie rice fields hold snow geese and specklebellies.
- The Mississippi Alluvial Plain across eastern Arkansas draws geese to its soybean and corn fields.
- The White River Basin floodplains feed snow geese and specklebellies.
- Cache River National Wildlife Refuge and the nearby farm fields attract geese in late fall and winter.
Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Arkansas
Limits vary by species and season. The regular snow goose limit is generous, specklebellies are tightly capped, and the spring conservation order has no limit at all.
| Species or Season | Daily Bag Limit | Possession Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Canada Goose (Sept. 1-Oct. 15) | 5 | 15 |
| White-Fronted Goose | 2 | 6 |
| Snow, Blue, and Ross’s Goose (Regular Season) | 20 | None |
| Light Goose Conservation Order | None | None |
A guide service that lists the 2024-25 limits shows white-fronted geese at 2 per day with a possession limit of 6. It shows snow, blue, and Ross’s geese at 20 per day with no possession limit. AGFC’s 2026-27 page also lists 2 and 6 for the November-through-January block and no bag limit for the conservation order.
Important Note: The web copy of AGFC’s 2026-27 table doesn’t make clear which species its 2-and-6 entry covers for the late segments. Check the official AGFC page or the printed guidebook for the exact late-season Canada goose and snow goose limits before you hunt.
Hunters crossing state lines should check each state’s own rules. Limits differ a lot from one state to the next, as you’ll see in our Texas goose hunting season guide.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Arkansas
The spring light goose conservation order lets you hunt snow, blue, and Ross’s geese long after the regular season ends. It was established in 1999 to help manage snow goose overpopulation. For 2027, it runs February 1-5 and February 8 through April 25.
The order allows electronic callers and unplugged guns, with no bag limits. One outfitter says peak hunting runs from the February 1 opener through the first week of March. Migrating flocks stop in the rice and winter wheat fields as they push north.
Important Note: Older guide-service pages say you need no Arkansas license for the spring season. That is out of date. AGFC says a valid Arkansas hunting license and state duck stamp are now required to take part in the light goose conservation order.
Gear still matters in spring. Hunters often run 1,000 or more decoys. Layout blinds or A-frame blinds are common. A guide’s conservation hunt prep checklist is worth a read before your first spring trip.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Arkansas
Before opening day, make sure you have your license, stamps, and Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration. Missing any one of them can end your hunt with a citation.
- An Arkansas hunting license (resident or nonresident).
- An Arkansas state duck stamp, which now also covers the spring conservation order.
- Your HIP registration. Migratory bird hunters 16 or older must carry proof of Arkansas HIP registration, which you can complete when buying a license from AGFC online or at an office.
- A federal duck stamp if you’re 16 or older and hunting during the regular season.
Spring hunters have one more item to check. Guide service information for the 2025-26 spring season listed a free Light Goose Conservation Order Permit that you needed to hunt from February 1 through April 25. Confirm with AGFC whether that permit or registration number still applies, since the license rules changed this year.
Youth, veteran, and public-land hunters have some extra details to know:
- On the February 6-7, 2027 youth hunt, hunters 15 and younger may take geese. Youths without hunter education need a mentor 21 or older.
- Mentors may call waterfowl but may not hunt.
- Youth hunters don’t need a WMA General Use Permit.
- New waterfowl permit hunts will be set up at Prairie Bayou WMA, the Buckingham Flats Greentree Reservoir on Bayou Meto WMA, and the Wiville West Unit of Rex Hancock Black Swamp WMA.
- Nonresidents can’t waterfowl hunt Dave Donaldson Black River WMA during the first duck segment, November 21-29, 2026.
AGFC wrote those WMA rules to reduce crowding, per its April 2026 regulations announcement. If you plan to hunt other Arkansas game this fall, our guides to turkey hunting season in Arkansas and bear hunting season in Arkansas cover their permit rules.
Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Arkansas
Regular-season shooting hours begin one-half hour before sunrise and end at sunset. Youth hunt days use the same hours and limits as the regular seasons. On WMAs, youth hunters can hunt from 30 minutes before sunrise until sunset. Shoot only during those hours, or you risk a violation.
The conservation order has looser rules. Hunters may use electronic calls and unplugged shotguns, and shooting hours run from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Those allowances apply only during the spring order.
| Rule | Regular Season | Conservation Order |
|---|---|---|
| Shooting Hours | 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset | 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset |
| Electronic Calls | Not allowed | Allowed |
| Shotgun Plug | Required (3-shell limit) | Not required |
| Shot Type | Nontoxic shot only | Nontoxic shot only |
Pro Tip: Take your plug out only after the conservation order opens on February 1, and put it back in before any later waterfowl hunt. Check your shells, too. Nontoxic shot is required for waterfowl, spring or fall.
Keep your AGFC guidebook with you in the field. Rules change from year to year, and the Greenhead summary of the 2026-27 changes is a good quick refresher before opening day.
With the season dates, limits, and license rules above, you’re ready to plan your Arkansas goose hunts. Book your trips around the October 31 opener and the spring order, and confirm any limits you’re unsure about with AGFC first.
