Goose Hunting Season in Virginia: Zones, Dates, and Bag Limits by Species
October 18, 2026
Goose hunting season in Virginia runs in layers. You get an early September Canada goose season, a split regular season that changes by zone, and a snow goose season that runs well into March. Your daily limit depends on the bird and on where you stand when you shoot it. Canada geese are capped at 2 per day in the Atlantic Population zone, while snow geese allow 25 per day.
This guide covers the 2026-27 dates, zone rules, bag limits, licenses, and shooting hours. The numbers come from the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and other hunting-regulation sources. Season frameworks shift from year to year, so treat the figures here as a planning tool and confirm them with DWR before you load your truck.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Virginia
Virginia splits its goose seasons into dark-goose and light-goose segments. The dark-goose seasons are the September early season and the regular season, which varies by zone. The light-goose season is the longest and runs into spring. Virginia sits in the Atlantic Flyway, one of four major migratory bird corridors in North America.
The table below lists the 2026-27 dates as published by DWR and verified by third-party trackers.
| Season | Zone | 2026-27 Dates |
|---|---|---|
| September Canada Goose | Statewide | September 1-25, 2026 (closed as of October 2026) |
| Canada Goose (includes White-Fronted) | Atlantic Population (AP) Zone | November 24-29 and December 24-January 31 |
| Canada Goose (includes White-Fronted) | Resident Population (RP) Zone | November 18-29 and December 19-February 21 |
| Light Goose (Snow and Ross’s) | Statewide | November 25, 2026-March 10, 2027 |
| Atlantic Brant | Statewide | January 15-31, 2027 |
| Light Goose Conservation Order | Designated zone | Offering for 2027 was to be decided in September 2026 |
If you hunt doves in early September, the opening of the early goose season lands on the same date. Our Virginia dove hunting season breakdown helps you plan that opening weekend.
DWR posts the full schedule on its migratory game bird regulations page. It also offers a downloadable 2026-2027 seasons guide in PDF form.
Important Note: Last season’s dates are not this season’s dates. The 2025-26 AP zone season ran December 24-31 and January 10-31, but the 2026-27 schedule adds a late-November segment and runs straight through January 31.
Canada Goose Season in Virginia
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the bread and butter of Virginia goose hunting. Resident birds live in the state year-round, and migrants push in from the north as winter sets in. Virginia holds both migrating and resident geese, and the Chesapeake Bay watershed attracts thousands of migrants every year.
September Early Season
The early season is statewide and targets resident birds. It runs September 1-25. Small ponds, lakes, and fields near urban areas tend to be productive during this period. Hunting is not allowed within the Amelia and Dick Cross Wildlife Management Areas during this season.
Regular Season by Zone
Virginia manages Canada geese in two zones because the share of migrant birds differs across the state. DWR sets separate hunting zones based on the percentage of migrant geese in each one. The AP zone covers the eastern part of the state, and the rest generally falls into the RP zone. DWR publishes a zone map, so check your hunting spot against it before you go.
- AP zone: November 24-29 and December 24-January 31, with a limit of 2 geese per day.
- RP zone: November 18-29 and December 19-February 21, with a limit of 5 geese per day.
The AP zone is tighter for a reason. The Atlantic Flyway Council voted for a restrictive 30-day season with a 1-goose daily limit for 2025-26 after the population model and the observed breeding pair estimate disagreed. The 2026-27 listing shows the daily limit back at 2.
Pro Tip: Field hunts are common in the Piedmont and Northern Neck. One guide service runs its field hunts in Orange, Fauquier, Culpeper, and Warsaw counties. If you hunt deer in the same counties, check our Virginia deer hunting season page so your goose spreads do not overlap with deer hunters.
Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Virginia
Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are grouped as light geese. DWR describes the category as greater and lesser snow geese plus Ross’s geese. The season is long and the limit is generous. The regular light goose season runs November 25, 2026 to March 10, 2027, with 25 geese per day and no possession limit.
The generous framework exists because the birds are a management problem. DWR’s fact sheet says snow goose regulations are as liberal as federal frameworks allow, and the bag limit rose from 15 to 25 in 2010. The population is still quite large.
Where Snow Geese Concentrate
The Eastern Shore is the hot spot. Chincoteague is listed in many publications as the wintering grounds for the greater snow goose, and the Delmarva Peninsula holds more of them than anywhere else in the country. Marsh hunting there differs from field hunting in the Midwest. You face smaller flocks, and one outfitter reports about ten shots per goose even at 25 to 50 yards.
If you plan a trip across the Chesapeake, our Maryland goose hunting season guide covers the other side of the Delmarva Peninsula.
White-Fronted Geese and Brant
Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) have no separate season in Virginia. All Canada goose seasons also include white-fronted geese, so the same dates, zones, and limits apply. They show up less often than Canadas, but specklebellies are a prized target in agricultural fields.
Atlantic brant (Branta bernicla) have their own short window. HuntingSeason.com lists the 2026-27 statewide brant season as January 15-31, 2027, citing DWR as its source. Confirm the exact dates in the DWR guide before you plan a trip.
Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Virginia
Bag limits are the easiest rule to get wrong because they change by season, zone, and species. The table below shows the 2026-27 limits where DWR has published them.
| Goose Type | Daily Limit | Possession Limit |
|---|---|---|
| September Canada Goose (statewide) | 10 | 30 |
| Canada Goose, AP Zone | 2 | 6 |
| Canada Goose, RP Zone | 5 | 15 |
| Light Goose (regular season) | 25 | No limit |
| Light Goose Conservation Order | No limit | No limit |
| Atlantic Brant (2025-26 figure) | 1 | 3 |
White-fronted geese count toward the Canada goose limit in each zone. The brant figure comes from the 2025-26 season, so verify it in the current DWR guide.
Common Mistake: Hunters often carry last year’s limit in their heads. The 2025-26 rules cut the AP zone limit from 2 per day to 1. The 2026-27 listing shows 2 again, so a hunter who remembers last season’s limit is giving up a bird for no reason.
Limits in other states look different. If you cross state lines, compare Virginia’s rules with our guides for Ohio, Michigan, or Texas.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Virginia
The conservation order stretches snow goose hunting past the regular season. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service created a separate federal rule that allows light geese to be taken outside the general hunting seasons. Virginia offers its version after the regular season in a designated zone.
The 2025-26 order ran February 1 to April 5, 2026. For 2027, DWR said the offering would be determined in September 2026. The sources I reviewed did not confirm that decision, so check DWR’s Light Goose Conservation Order page for the final dates and zone map.
Important Note: Do not plan a spring snow goose trip until DWR confirms the 2027 order. Dates, zone boundaries, and registration timing are all announced by DWR, not set by federal rule alone.
What Changes During the Order
- Unplugged shotguns, electronic calls, shooting until one-half hour after sunset, and no daily bag limit are all permitted.
- You must register for the season before you hunt.
- A Hunter Activity Report is due within two weeks after the season closes, either online or by mail.
Registration timing varies. For the 2026 order, registration opened December 4, 2025. Expect a similar window if the 2027 order goes ahead.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Virginia
Goose hunters in Virginia need a stack of documents, not a single license. Missing any one of them can turn a good morning into a citation. The core list is short, and it applies to the September season as well as the regular season.
- Virginia hunting license: A valid license is required unless you qualify for an exemption.
- Virginia Migratory Waterfowl Conservation Stamp: Required unless you are license exempt.
- HIP registration: DWR lists HIP registration alongside the federal duck stamp and state waterfowl stamp for the September season.
- Federal duck stamp: Required for hunters 16 and older, alongside the Virginia duck stamp and HIP registration.
- Conservation order registration: Needed only for the spring order. Hunters do not register to hunt the general light goose season.
Fees and exemptions change, so confirm current prices and rules through DWR’s license page before you buy. If you hunt other game in Virginia, your license may cover more than geese. See our guides for Virginia turkey season and Virginia bear season to plan the rest of your year.
Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Virginia
Shooting hours are simple for most of the year but shift during the September season and the conservation order. For all waterfowl, hunting runs from one-half hour before sunrise until sunset, with exceptions for the September Canada goose season, the conservation order, and the regular light goose season when other waterfowl seasons are closed.
| Season | Shooting Hours |
|---|---|
| September, East of I-95, Sept. 1-18 | One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset |
| September, East of I-95, Sept. 19-25 | One-half hour before sunrise to sunset |
| September, West of I-95, Sept. 1-21 | One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset |
| September, West of I-95, Sept. 22-25 | One-half hour before sunrise to sunset |
| Regular Canada goose and light goose seasons | One-half hour before sunrise to sunset |
| Light Goose Conservation Order | Until one-half hour after sunset |
Legal Methods and Equipment
Your gun and calls follow different rules depending on the season. During the September season, shotguns holding more than three shells may be used when no other waterfowl seasons are open. The conservation order lifts the plug rule entirely, and electronic calls and unplugged shotguns are also permitted during the regular light goose season when other waterfowl seasons are closed.
Shot type is the rule hunters forget most. Non-toxic shot is required when you hunt waterfowl, so leave the lead shells at home. Steel loads work fine, and one outfitter recommends BBs for geese.
Virginia’s goose seasons reward hunters who read the zone map and check the dates each year. Start with the DWR guide, confirm your license stack, and plan your hunts around the September opener, the late-November segments, and the long snow goose window. If you hunt farther afield, Illinois and Indiana offer different flyway and bag-limit rules worth comparing.
