Goose Hunting Season in Texas
Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Texas has two goose zones, and the zone you hunt in decides when you can shoot. In the Western Zone, geese stay legal a week longer than in the East. In the Eastern Zone, light geese hold on until Feb. 19, 2027, while dark geese close Jan. 31.

Goose hunting season in Texas is also changing shape. The spring light goose conservation order is gone, the light goose bag limit is lower than it used to be, and plenty of older web pages still show the old rules. This article gives you the 2026-27 dates, limits, license requirements, and shooting rules, so you can check them against the official Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) listings before you head out.

Texas sits in the Central Flyway, and the birds you hunt depend on where you set up. That could be coastal rice fields, Panhandle playa lakes, or the peanut country around Lubbock.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in Texas

Texas splits its goose seasons by zone and by goose type. According to TPWD’s goose regulations, the Western Zone is everything west of a line running from the International Toll Bridge at Laredo north along IH-35 and 35W to Fort Worth, then northwest to Bowie and north to the Oklahoma line. The Eastern Zone is the rest of the state. All counties have goose seasons.

The 2026-27 dates below come from the TPWD 2026-2027 hunting season dates page.

As of October 11, 2026, the early season has already closed, and the regular season opens Nov. 7. That gives you about four weeks to scout fields, secure landowner permission, and get your paperwork in order.

Plan around other seasons too. The regular goose opener lands during deer season, so check the Texas deer hunting season dates if you hunt both. If you started the fall with doves, the Texas dove hunting season guide will help you line up your calendar.

Pro Tip: Look up your county in the TPWD Outdoor Annual before you buy shells. Zone lines cut through the middle of the state, and counties near IH-35 are easy to get wrong.

Canada Goose Season in Texas

The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is the only goose with a dedicated early season in Texas, and that season is Eastern Zone only. The 2026 early season ran Sept. 12-27, so it is closed now. Once the regular season opens Nov. 7, Canada geese are hunted as part of the dark goose season.

The early season exists to target resident and early-arriving birds before the big winter flights show up. You get a separate bag for it. In the Eastern Zone, the early season allows 5 Early Canada geese a day, with a possession limit of three times the daily bag.

In the regular season, Canada geese count toward your dark goose bag. Western Zone dark geese run Nov. 7 through Feb. 7, 2027, and Eastern Zone dark geese run through Jan. 31, 2027. The Panhandle and the Lubbock area are the usual places to find them. The Panhandle’s farm fields and playa lakes hold Canada geese, snow geese, and specklebellies.

If you plan to chase honkers beyond Texas, the Colorado goose hunting season guide covers a state where Canada geese get far more attention.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Texas

Texas groups these birds into two categories. Snow geese and Ross’s geese are light geese, and white-fronted geese are dark geese. Light geese in Texas means snow geese, blue-phase snow geese, and Ross’s geese.

The snow goose (Anser caerulescens) and the smaller Ross’s goose (Anser rossii) share the light goose season. That season runs Nov. 7, 2026 to Feb. 7, 2027 in the West and to Feb. 19, 2027 in the East. Southeast Texas rice fields and coastal marshes pull in big flocks during migration and winter. Scout the fields where they feed and rest.

Texas hunters have noticed a drop in light goose numbers. The continental light goose population peaked at 19 million in 2007 and fell to about 3 million in 2023. Don’t expect the sky-darkening flocks your grandfather talked about. The birds that do come through are more pressured and warier.

The greater white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons), which Texas hunters call a specklebelly or “speck,” is a dark goose. It follows the dark goose dates and has its own bag restriction in the East, covered in the next section. Specklebellies and snow geese are both abundant in Texas.

Brant (Branta bernicla) are a coastal species that rarely show up in Texas. TPWD’s 2026-27 goose listings give dates for Canada, dark, and light geese only, with no brant season. Don’t shoot one that wanders in unless TPWD publishes a season for it. If you hunt snow geese on their way north, the Iowa goose hunting season and Minnesota goose hunting season pages show how those same flights are managed farther up the flyway.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Texas

Limits are where most hunters get tripped up, because many websites still show the old light goose limit of 10. TPWD cut it. The daily light goose bag dropped from 10 to 5, and the possession limit was standardized to three times the daily bag. Light geese used to have no possession limit at all.

The TPWD county listing for Hunt County shows the Eastern Zone limits for 2026-27. They are 5 Early Canada geese, 5 regular dark geese with no more than 2 white-fronted geese, and 5 light geese in the aggregate.

ZoneEarly CanadaDark Geese (Daily)Light Geese (Daily)Possession
Eastern55, with no more than 2 white-fronted5 in the aggregate3 times the daily bag
WesternNo early season5 in the aggregate5 in the aggregate3 times the daily bag

The Western Zone is more relaxed on specklebellies. TPWD proposed replacing the two-bird white-fronted restriction with a five-bird dark goose limit in the Western Zone. A Texas waterfowl season summary on Blindbook lists the 2026-27 Western Zone dark goose bag as 5 in the aggregate, including Canada and white-fronted geese.

Always confirm your county’s numbers in the Outdoor Annual before you hunt, since the printed limits control. And if you cross state lines, remember that bag limits change at the border. The Michigan goose hunting season page is a good example of a state with a very different structure.

Important Note: Some guide-service and outfitter pages still list 10 light geese a day and no possession limit. Those numbers match older Texas rules, and TPWD’s current county listings show 5 light geese per day. Go by TPWD.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Texas

Texas no longer has a spring light goose conservation order. In 2024, Texas became the first state to remove the light goose conservation order, using the extra days to stretch the regular light goose season into February. If you remember hunting snows in March with an unplugged gun, that opportunity is gone.

The order was never a normal season. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service created it in 1999 because swelling light goose populations were damaging Arctic breeding habitat. As a Texas Farm Bureau interview explained, a conservation order is not technically a hunting season. It was a management action with liberal rules.

Under the old order, hunters could use electronic calls, remove shotgun plugs, and shoot an additional 30 minutes after sunset, none of which was allowed during the regular season. There were also no bag or possession limits.

TPWD staff said the order was no longer needed. In the words of TPWD’s Owen Fitzsimmons, low numbers of wintering light geese and a rapidly declining population made it an optional tool that was no longer necessary. Reporting in the Houston Chronicle and in Shooting Sportsman covers the decision in more detail.

Nothing in TPWD’s 2026-27 goose season tables shows a spring order. The last light goose day in the Eastern Zone is Feb. 19, 2027. After that, hunters shift to other spring seasons, and the Texas turkey hunting season is the obvious next move.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Texas

You need four things to hunt geese legally in Texas, and you should carry all of them. Hunters must carry a valid Texas hunting license and a migratory game bird stamp endorsement, and hunters 16 and older also need a valid federal duck stamp and Harvest Information Program (HIP) certification.

  1. A valid Texas hunting license
  2. The Texas migratory game bird endorsement
  3. A federal duck stamp, if you are 16 or older
  4. HIP certification

HIP registration is quick. You complete it when you buy your license by telling the clerk you plan to hunt migratory game birds. If you buy online, answer the migratory bird questions during checkout.

Mind the license year. Hunting licenses are valid from the purchase date until August 31, so a license you bought for last season has expired. Hunter education rules also apply to many hunters, including most people born on or after Sept. 2, 1971, so check your status before you buy.

The Texas hunting license requirements page covers residency categories, exemptions, and hunter education in detail. If you also plan to hunt gators, the Texas alligator hunting season page explains a separate permit system.

Pro Tip: Take a photo of your license, endorsement, and duck stamp, and keep a printed copy in your blind bag. A wet phone is not a good answer for a game warden.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Texas

Legal shooting hours for geese run from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Be set up and finished with your decoys before the clock starts, because shooting before legal light is a common citation. The extra 30 minutes after sunset that applied under the old conservation order no longer exists.

Texas follows federal waterfowl rules on equipment. Know these before you load up:

  • Use a shotgun that is 10 gauge or smaller, plugged so it holds no more than three shells total.
  • Use non-toxic shot only. Lead shot is illegal for waterfowl, and that includes geese.
  • Don’t use electronic calls. They were never allowed during the regular season, and with the conservation order gone, that applies all winter.
  • Don’t hunt over bait. Hunting over baited fields is a federal violation, so ask the landowner what has been put out.

Mouth calls and flagging are fair game, and so are field decoys, full-body shells, and layout blinds. Most Texas goose hunters work agricultural fields, which means the biggest legal issue is often access. Get landowner permission before you scout, and confirm which fields you are allowed to hunt.

Before opening day, check your gun’s plug, verify your shot type, and set your alarm with legal light in mind. Texas goose hunting rewards hunters who read the rules and then outwork the birds. Check the TPWD Outdoor Annual again close to the opener, since the agency can post in-season updates.
