Goose hunting season in Oregon is not one season. The state is split into five goose zones, and each has its own opening day, its own splits, and its own bag limit.

The calendar is already moving. By mid-October 2026, the South Coast and High Desert and Blue Mountain zones are open, the Southwest and Mid-Columbia zones open October 17, and the Northwest Permit Zone opens October 24.

This article covers the 2026-27 dates by zone, the limits for each goose group, the permits you need, and the shooting-hour and method rules. Check the current ODFW game bird regulations before you go, because zone boundaries and late-season closures on public land change the answer for your hunt.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in Oregon

The table below covers the early September season and the regular season for each zone. It includes Canada geese (Branta canadensis), greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), and white geese such as snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii). Brant (Branta bernicla) run on a separate statewide schedule, covered in the sections below.

Oregon’s 2026-27 migratory game bird regulations list a different set of regular-season dates for each of the five goose zones.

The September Canada goose season does not require a Northwest Goose Permit, and the South Coast Zone stays closed during it. The South Coast also has the longest regular season on the board, running into early March.

ODFW staff also recommended a two-day youth waterfowl weekend on Sept. 26 and 27. State wildlife area rules confirm those dates, with hunting on some areas limited to youth participants.

Pro Tip: Print or screenshot the date row for your zone, not the whole table. Hunters crossing zone lines, for example from the Mid-Columbia Zone into the Northwest Permit Zone, often assume the dates carry over. They don’t.

Canada Goose Season in Oregon

Canada geese are the bread and butter of Oregon goose hunting, and the limits swing widely by zone. The Northwest Permit Zone is the tightest. The South Coast Zone is the most generous.

The early September season is the best chance at resident birds before the migrants arrive. ODFW’s recommendation set a daily bag of 5 Canada geese in every open area, with possession at triple the daily bag. The 2026-27 regulations list that September limit as 5 daily and 15 in possession.

For the regular season, the bag limits by zone are:

  • Northwest Permit Zone: 2 daily and 6 in possession.
  • Southwest, High Desert and Blue Mountain, and Mid-Columbia zones: 4 daily and 12 in possession.
  • South Coast Zone: 6 daily and 18 in possession.

Pay attention to dusky Canada geese in the Northwest Permit Zone. The bag limit there is 2 Canada geese, but dusky Canada geese are closed to harvest. A tight flock of large, slow-honking birds that decoys easily may be duskies, so identify before you shoot.

Cackling geese, the small Canada-type birds that winter in the Willamette Valley, are managed alongside Canada geese in this zone. The daily limit is two Canada or cackling geese combined. Details for the zone, including boundaries, are on the Northwest Permit Goose Season page.

If you’re mixing goose hunts with other Oregon seasons, check the Oregon dove season dates so a September trip covers both.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Oregon

White geese and white-fronted geese share a season window that usually runs longer than the Canada goose season. That gives you extra weeks in the field, especially in the south and east of the state.

The Klamath Basin is the classic destination. Its wetlands and agricultural fields attract snow geese, Ross’s geese, and Canada geese during migration. Greater white-fronted geese, which hunters call specks or specklebellies, start moving through the basin in September on their way to the Sacramento Valley.

Limits differ from the Canada goose limits. The Northwest Permit Zone allows 6 white-fronted geese and 20 white geese. The 2026-27 regulations decreased the white-fronted goose bag limit, so don’t rely on last year’s number from memory.

Three exceptions catch hunters:

  • In Lake County only, the daily limit is one white-fronted goose, with a possession limit of three.
  • On Sauvie Island Wildlife Area, only white geese may be taken in the units open to goose hunting.
  • From Feb. 1 to March 10, goose hunting is closed on the Miller Island Unit of Klamath WA, Summer Lake WA, Ladd Marsh WA, and the Klamath NWR Complex, except for hunters in the Veterans and Active Military Personnel Waterfowl Hunt.

Brant have the shortest season. The statewide season runs Nov. 28 to Dec. 13, with a daily limit of 2 and a possession limit of 6. A special permit is required to harvest brant, so get it before you head to the coast.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Oregon

Limits are set by zone and goose group. A common question is whether the possession limit resets each day. It doesn’t. It is the total you may have on hand, so a three-day trip with a full daily bag each morning will hit the possession cap on day three.

These figures come from the 2026-27 Oregon migratory game bird seasons table, so check the migratory game bird seasons page for the full footnotes. Remember the white-fronted limit was reduced this year.

Important Note: A hunting guide written for earlier seasons may show a different white-fronted limit. Use the 2026-27 regulations as the final word.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Oregon

Many hunters ask about a spring light goose conservation order because other flyways use one to cut snow goose numbers. In the 2026-27 Oregon regulations I reviewed, I found no separate conservation order for light geese. Oregon’s late-winter hunting happens inside the regular season periods instead.

The calendar shows how late those periods run. The South Coast and High Desert and Blue Mountain zones keep goose seasons open until March 10, 2027, and the Mid-Columbia white goose period ends Feb. 28, 2027. Federal law under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act prohibits hunting after March 10 and before September 1.

Public land is where the late season gets tricky. All national wildlife refuges listed in the state’s refuge regulations are closed to goose hunting after Jan. 31, 2027. If you want to hunt the full late window, line up private land with permission or check each wildlife area’s rules first.

Crossing state lines for a spring snow goose hunt means learning another state’s order. Our guides to Minnesota goose hunting and Colorado goose hunting show how rules shift in other flyways.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Oregon

Getting the paperwork wrong is the easiest way to lose a hunt. Oregon uses a layered system, and each layer has its own deadline or fee.

  1. Hunting license: You need a valid Oregon hunting license, resident or nonresident, for the year you hunt.
  2. Game bird validation: Oregon game bird validations run on a July 1 to June 30 cycle, which is different from the calendar-year big game tags.
  3. Federal Duck Stamp: Youth hunters aged 16 and older must carry a Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp. The same stamp rule applies to adults.
  4. Northwest Goose Permit: You need it for the regular Northwest Permit Zone season, but not for the September season. Don’t wait until the last minute if a permit or goose ID test is required.
  5. Brant permit: A special permit is needed to harvest brant.

Public land adds more steps. At the Mid-Columbia River Refuge Complex, you can enter the McCormack lottery or hunt standby, check in and out at the Hunter Check Station, and pay a daily permit and day-use fee. On Sauvie Island, open days follow the wildlife area’s reservation hunt schedule. Details for each site are listed on the state and federal refuge regulations page.

If you also chase deer, elk, or bears in the same year, remember those tag deadlines are separate. Our Oregon deer season guide and Oregon bear season guide cover them, and the Oregon turkey season guide covers the spring gobbler hunt.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Oregon

Oregon uses the standard migratory bird window. Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. The Northwest Permit Goose Season page also publishes a date-by-date table of start and end times, so use it there instead of guessing.

The legal-method rules follow federal waterfowl law. Confirm each one in the current regulations before you go, but here is what hunters most often run into:

  • Use nontoxic shot only. Lead is illegal for goose hunting.
  • Plug your shotgun so it holds no more than three shells total.
  • Don’t hunt over bait, and don’t use electronic calls.
  • Know the closed areas: wildlife area and refuge closures can start Feb. 1 or after Jan. 31 even when the zone season is still open.
  • Identify dusky Canada geese before you pull the trigger in the Northwest Permit Zone.

Pro Tip: Before you leave, check ODFW for the zone map and any emergency closures. A 15-minute check beats a ticket.

Plan your first hunt around your zone’s opening date, then work through the permit steps early. Most Oregon goose violations come from zone, limit, or closed-area mistakes, not from the birds.
