Goose Hunting Season in Missouri
Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Goose hunting season in Missouri doesn’t end when duck season does. The Light Goose Conservation Order runs February 7 through April 30, so you can keep a shotgun in the truck long after most waterfowlers have put their decoys away.

This article covers the 2026-27 dates, daily and possession limits, the spring conservation order, required permits, and shooting hours. It also covers the methods Missouri allows and bans. Every figure comes from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) or from outlets reporting its rules.

Important Note: MDC set these dates for the 2026 migratory-game-bird and 2026-2027 waterfowl seasons, pending final federal approval. Dates and limits can change, so check the MDC goose regulations page before you hunt.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in Missouri

Missouri splits goose hunting into an early September-style special season, a long regular season, and a spring conservation order. For Canada geese (Branta canadensis) and brant (Branta bernicla), the early season ran October 3 through October 10, 2026. That window has closed, so your next chance is the regular opener.

The season for white-fronted, Canada, and brant geese generally runs from November 11 through February 6, 2027. Snow, blue, and Ross’s geese open on the same November 11 date and run through February 6, 2027. The season is about three months long, and you can overlap it with deer season if you hunt both.

SeasonSpecies Open2026-27 Dates
Early Canada Goose SeasonCanada geese and brantOctober 3-10, 2026 (closed)
Regular Goose SeasonCanada, brant, white-fronted, snow, blue, Ross’sNovember 11, 2026 – February 6, 2027
Light Goose Conservation OrderSnow, blue, and Ross’s geeseFebruary 7 – April 30, 2027

Youth hunters get their own days. Youth waterfowl days fall in late October and November, depending on zone, for hunters age 15 and younger hunting under adult supervision. The North Zone youth weekend is October 24-25, 2026.

If you plan a road trip, compare Missouri’s calendar with its neighbors. The Illinois goose hunting season and the Iowa goose hunting season use different framework dates, so don’t assume the same opener.

Canada Goose Season in Missouri

Canada geese are the bread and butter of Missouri field hunting. They feed in cut corn and winter wheat, and they work decoys well early in the season. The early October window targets resident and molt-migrant birds before the northern flocks arrive.

The daily limit for Canada geese and brant is a combined total. The daily limit is 3 and the possession limit is 9, counted across both species together. That combined total applies in the early season and the regular season alike.

  • Early season: October 3-10, 2026, closed as of October 11, 2026.
  • Regular season: November 11, 2026 through February 6, 2027.
  • Limit: 3 per day and 9 in possession, Canada geese and brant combined.

Pro Tip: Late-season Canada geese get wary of pressured fields. Scout the roost at dusk, then set up where birds feed the next morning rather than where they fed yesterday.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Missouri

Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are classed as light geese, and they travel together in huge flocks. Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), nicknamed specklebellies, are the dark-goose prize many Missouri hunters want on their strap. Brant share the Canada goose limit, as covered above.

All of these species open November 11, 2026. Snow, blue, and Ross’s geese stay open through February 6, 2027, with a daily limit of 20. White-fronted geese have a two-bird daily limit.

Northwest Missouri is the traditional light goose hotspot. Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge, now Loess Bluffs NWR, is famous for massive concentrations of snow geese and other waterfowl during migration. Hunt the fields around refuges, not the refuges themselves, and check each public area’s own rules first.

  1. Confirm the species before you pull the trigger, because white-fronted geese carry a lower limit than light geese.
  2. Keep dark geese and light geese separate in your count.
  3. Remember that brant count against your Canada goose limit.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Missouri

Limits depend on species group, and they are the easiest rules to break by accident. MDC lists light geese at 20 daily with no possession limit, Canada and brant geese combined at 3 daily and 9 in possession, and white-fronted geese at 2 daily and 6 in possession. The MDC goose regulations page carries the official table.

Species GroupDaily LimitPossession Limit
Snow, Blue, and Ross’s Geese20No limit
Canada Geese and Brant (Combined)39
White-Fronted Geese26

Possession limits cover birds in your freezer, your cooler, and your truck. If you hunt several days in a row, count what is left from earlier days before you leave the field. Limits for ducks and coots are separate, so a mixed bag needs careful tracking.

Common Mistake: Hunters often treat snow geese as unlimited all season. The no-possession-limit rule for light geese applies to the spring order. In the regular season the daily limit is 20.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Missouri

The spring order is the most generous goose season in the state. Missouri introduced the Light Goose Conservation Order in the 1990s, which brought extended seasons, relaxed bag limits, and expanded hunting methods such as electronic calls. Its purpose is to reduce overabundant populations and protect fragile Arctic habitats.

The order runs February 7 through April 30 each year, and hunting is limited to snow, blue, and Ross’s geese. For 2027 it runs February 7 through April 30 with no daily or possession limits. Most hunters find the best action in February and early March, when the migration peaks.

The order also loosens the rules on how you hunt:

  • Shooting hours extend half an hour past sunset.
  • Electronic calls and hunting dogs are allowed.
  • Shotguns can hold more than three shells, and hunters must still use nontoxic shot.
  • There is no limit on the number of shells you can carry.

Not every rule relaxes. Bans on lead shot, live decoys, and night vision equipment stay in effect. For more on how the order works in the field, see the Huntwise snow goose guide.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Missouri

What you need depends on the season. For the regular goose season you need the standard waterfowl package, and for the spring order you need only one permit. Mixing them up is the most common paperwork error.

Regular Season Requirements

  • A Missouri Migratory Bird Hunting Permit plus the Federal Duck Stamp for hunters 16 and older.
  • Annual Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration.
  • The federal duck stamp, if paper, must be signed in ink across its face. Federal regulations now allow a fully digital duck stamp in place of a paper copy.

Spring Conservation Order Requirements

During the Light Goose Conservation Order, the only required permit is a Conservation Order Permit, with exceptions for lifetime permit holders. Hunters with a Resident Lifetime Conservation Partner Permit or a Resident Lifetime Small Game Hunting Permit do not need to buy one. The Small Game Hunting Permit, Migratory Bird Hunting Permit, and Federal Duck Stamp are not required during the order.

Check the MDC waterfowl regulations for current permit details and prices. If you also chase other game in Missouri, our guides to deer hunting season in Missouri and turkey hunting season in Missouri list the permits for those species.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Missouri

Regular-season shooting hours are straightforward. Hours in the early season ran from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. The same window applies in the regular season. Spring is different, because conservation order hours run from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.

SeasonShooting Hours
Early Canada Goose SeasonHalf hour before sunrise to sunset
Regular Goose SeasonHalf hour before sunrise to sunset
Light Goose Conservation OrderHalf hour before sunrise to half hour after sunset

Legal Methods in the Regular Season

Missouri requires nontoxic shot for waterfowl and coots statewide. One data aggregator also lists a plugged shotgun, a motor-off rule before shooting from a boat, and no electronic calls for regular-season geese. Confirm those points with the Blindbook Missouri summary and MDC before you hunt.

Some practices are banned in every season. Baiting is a prohibited method, and so are sink boxes and other low-floating devices that conceal the hunter beneath the water’s surface. Planting and flooding rules for baiting can be technical, so ask a conservation agent if you are unsure about a field.

Legal Methods in the Spring Order

Shotguns 10 gauge or smaller are permitted, including those that hold more than three shells. Motor or sailboats are allowed, but the motor must be completely off or the sails furled when you shoot. Steel, bismuth, or tungsten loads in 2¾-inch shells keep your setup simple.

Know the rules, keep your counts straight, and you can hunt Missouri geese from the November opener through the spring order. If you want to extend your calendar further, the dove hunting season in Missouri and bear hunting season in Missouri guides cover the other end of the year.
