Goose Hunting Season in Illinois: 2026-27 Dates, Zones, and Bag Limits
October 16, 2026
Goose hunting season in Illinois runs on a new map this year. For the 2026–2030 cycle, Illinois cut its waterfowl framework from four zones down to three: North, Central, and South. The season dates you memorized from earlier years may no longer apply to your county.
As of October 2026, the North Zone’s regular goose season opens Oct. 24, and its youth days fall on Oct. 17–18. This article gives you the dates by zone, species-specific seasons, daily limits, the spring conservation order, license requirements, and legal shooting hours. Check your zone map and the current IDNR digest before every trip, because the state can adjust details between printings.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Illinois
Illinois sets goose dates by zone, and the three-zone setup is the biggest change for 2026–27. The former South-Central and South zones were combined into one South Zone. That means southern hunters now share one opener instead of two.
Here is how the 2026–27 regular season lines up, based on IDNR-sourced schedules.
| Zone | Early Canada Goose | Regular Goose Season | Youth Waterfowl Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| North | Sept. 1–15, 2026 | Oct. 24–25 and Oct. 31, 2026–Jan. 26, 2027 | Oct. 17–18, 2026 |
| Central | Sept. 1–15, 2026 | Regular timing begins Oct. 31, 2026 | Oct. 24–25, 2026 |
| South | Sept. 1–15, 2026 | Nov. 14, 2026–Jan. 31, 2027 | Nov. 7–8, 2026 |
The state’s 2026–2030 season schedule lays out dates for every year of the five-year plan, so you can plan trips well ahead. The September Canada goose season has already ended for 2026, which makes the youth weekends your next chance to get out.
Important Note: Sources disagree on when the Central Zone goose season closes. One aggregator lists a Jan. 31 close, but the IDNR insert card text I could verify was incomplete. Confirm the Central Zone end date in the official 2026–27 digest before you plan a late-season hunt.

Canada Goose Season in Illinois
Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the bread and butter of Illinois goose hunting. You get two shots at them: a short early season in September and the regular season that runs through winter.
The early season lets you take up to five birds a day. The early Canada goose daily limit is 5 with a possession limit of 15, while the regular season drops to 3 per day and 9 in possession. Those numbers are listed for the North Zone, and the same structure applies statewide.
Where you hunt matters as much as when. Hunters regularly work these regions:
- Illinois River Valley: Flooded fields and marshes attract geese throughout the season.
- Southern Illinois: Rend Lake and Crab Orchard host large numbers of Canada and snow geese.
- Northern Illinois: Chain O’Lakes and surrounding fields provide habitat for migrating Canada geese.
- Mississippi River Valley: Backwaters and surrounding fields serve as stopovers during migration.
The Dive Bomb Industries migration guide breaks down these areas in more detail. If you also chase upland birds in the same trip, check the Illinois pheasant season so your dates do not overlap awkwardly.
Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Illinois
Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) fall under the “light goose” category in Illinois. Their regular season runs alongside Canada goose dates. In the North Zone, light geese are open Oct. 24–25 and Oct. 31, 2026–Jan. 26, 2027.
In the South Zone, the state schedule groups light geese and brant together, with a Nov. 14 to Jan. 31 window. Brant (Branta bernicla) are rare in Illinois, so confirm any brant-specific limit in the digest.
The greater white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons), nicknamed the specklebelly, has its own dates in the North and Central zones. In the South Zone, white-fronted goose season runs Nov. 14 to Jan. 31. I could not verify the 2026–27 North and Central white-front dates from the sources available. For reference, the 2025–26 season opened Oct. 20 in the North Zone and Nov. 5 in the Central Zone.
Pro Tip: Specklebellies often show up mixed in with light goose flocks. Learn the speckled belly and the call before you pull the trigger, since white-fronts carry a much lower daily limit than snow geese.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Illinois
Illinois bag limits vary by species and season segment. Light geese carry the most generous allowance, while Canada geese and white-fronts are tighter.
| Species / Season | Daily Limit | Possession Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Canada goose, early season (Sept. 1–15) | 5 | 15 |
| Canada goose, regular season | 3 | 9 |
| Light geese (snow, blue, Ross’s) | 20 | Unlimited |
| White-fronted goose (2021–22 figures) | 2 | 6 |
| Spring conservation order, light geese | No daily limit | No possession limit |
The white-front figures come from the 2021–22 season, the first year of the previous five-year plan. I did not find a 2026–27 white-front limit in the sources, so verify it before you hunt.
Possession limits count every bird you have, including geese in your freezer or at a processor. If you plan multi-day trips, track your total each evening so you stay legal.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Illinois
The conservation order gives you a chance to hunt snow, blue, and Ross’s geese after the regular season closes. It exists to reduce overabundant light goose populations, which is why the rules loosen.
Dates shift from year to year. The 2024–25 order ran Feb. 1 through April 30, 2025, with no bag limit on snow, blue, and Ross’s geese. I could not confirm the exact 2027 dates from the sources available, so check the IDNR digest once it posts.
Hunting methods change during the order. The Illinois conservation order allows electronic calls and unplugged shotguns, with no daily limits. Guided outfitters in the Mississippi and Illinois river bottoms say the best spring snow goose hunting usually falls from mid-February through mid-March.
For a look at how one outfitter structures these hunts, see the Gander Hill Goose Club spring snow goose page. Book early, since good pit and field spots fill fast.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Illinois
You need several items in your pocket before you shoulder a gun. The core list covers state and federal requirements, plus registration for migratory birds.
- Illinois hunting license: Required for residents and nonresidents, with hunter education if your age or status requires it.
- State migratory waterfowl stamp: Hunters must buy a state migratory waterfowl stamp ($16.50) and a federal migratory bird stamp ($28). Those prices are from the 2024–25 season, so confirm current fees at purchase.
- Federal duck stamp: Sign it across the face once purchased.
- HIP registration: Migratory bird hunters must register in the Harvest Information Program when buying a license.
Public land adds another layer. Illinois has over 100 public waterfowl hunting areas, and some use quota hunts and drawings for access. The state’s IRAP waterfowl page shows that the November application closed Sept. 11, 2026, and the December application closes Oct. 2, 2026. Both windows have passed, so check the page for any late openings or leftover permits.
Fees are one place hunters get caught off guard. Hunting Locator’s season summary gives a useful overview, but it covers 2024–25, so treat its prices as a reference point only.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Illinois
Regular-season shooting hours are simple. Goose hunting runs from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset for both early and regular Canada goose seasons. The same hours are listed for light geese.
The Hunt Illinois waterfowl page lists hours, limits, and extra rules by species. Zone-specific hour restrictions can apply on certain public areas, so read the site-specific rules posted for your hunting area.
Legal methods follow federal waterfowl rules during the regular season:
- Use approved nontoxic shot, such as steel, for all waterfowl hunting.
- Plug your shotgun so it holds no more than three shells total.
- Do not use electronic calls during the regular season.
- Expect looser rules only during the spring conservation order, when electronic calls and unplugged shotguns become legal.
Pro Tip: Unplug your shotgun only when the conservation order is open, and plug it again before the next regular season. Wardens check this often, and swapping between setups is an easy mistake.
Illinois also has coyote rules that interest many field hunters, so see our overview of coyote hunting laws in Illinois if you hunt both. Pin the zone map to your phone, print the digest page for your zone, and carry your stamps in the field. With the North Zone opening Oct. 24, you have about two weeks to scout fields and get your paperwork in order.
