Goose Hunting Season in Georgia
Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Georgia’s goose hunting season in Georgia runs in four separate segments, and the first one is already over. The early September season closed on September 27, so the October 10 opener is your next shot at honkers this year.

Most of what you will chase in Georgia are resident birds, since the state sits on the Atlantic Flyway and its geese get far less pressure than northern flocks. That makes timing, permits, and shooting hours matter more than fancy decoy spreads.

This guide gives you the 2026-27 segments, daily and possession limits, the licenses you must carry, and the rules on shooting hours and equipment. If you also chase doves in the same fall, our Georgia dove season guide uses the same migratory bird license, so one purchase covers both.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in Georgia

Georgia splits its goose season into several windows between early September and the end of January. According to Georgia’s migratory bird regulations on eRegulations, the 2026-27 Canada goose segments are Sept. 5-27, Oct. 10-25, Nov. 21-29, and Dec. 12 through Jan. 31, with a combined limit of 5 per day. Snow and white-fronted geese skip the September window.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources confirmed the early window in an August 2026 press release, which listed Sept. 5-27 with a daily limit of 5 geese. The same eRegulations page lists a federal youth, active duty military, and veterans waterfowl weekend on Nov. 14-15, 2026. Youth under 16 hunt with an adult at least 18 who may not shoot.

Important Note: Some third-party sites list the fourth Canada goose segment as Dec. 5 to Jan. 24. Georgia’s regulations summary on eRegulations and the BlindBook season table both show Dec. 12 to Jan. 31 for 2026-27. Confirm against the official Georgia Hunting and Fishing Regulations guide before you lock in a late-season trip.

Canada Goose Season in Georgia

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the bread and butter of Georgia goose hunting. Most birds you meet in September and October are resident geese that live on farm ponds, golf courses, and reservoirs year-round. By the December and January segment, migrants from the Atlantic Flyway can mix in with them.

Early season birds are predictable. Georgia’s state waterfowl biologist, Kara Nitschke, has said that these geese tend to fly in, land on open water, and walk up the bank to feed in nearby fields. That means you should scout the water first, then set up where the birds feed.

When Each Segment Fits Your Style

  • Early season (Sept. 5-27): Warm weather, naive birds, and no competing duck season. This window has ended for 2026.
  • October segment (Oct. 10-25): Cooler mornings and little pressure on local flocks. It opened this weekend.
  • Thanksgiving segment (Nov. 21-29): Overlaps the first duck split, so expect more hunters on public water.
  • Winter segment (Dec. 12 to Jan. 31): The longest window and the best chance at both resident and migrant birds.

Lakes such as Juliette, Clarks Hill, West Point, and Seminole offer public water for goose hunting, and wildlife management areas open for small game also allow goose hunting during the statewide seasons. Always get permission before you hunt private ponds. If you want to compare with another Atlantic Flyway state, see our Maryland goose hunting season guide.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Georgia

Georgia hunters see far fewer light geese and white-fronted geese than Canadas, but the seasons are real. Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are small, white, and often travel in tight flocks. Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) are brown-gray birds with a pink bill and orange legs.

The 2026-27 season table on eRegulations shows snow and white-fronted geese open Oct. 10-25, Nov. 21-29, and Dec. 12 through Jan. 31, with a combined daily limit of 5. BlindBook’s 2026-27 listing shows the same three windows and a possession limit of 15.

Brant (Branta bernicla) are sea geese that winter mostly farther north along the Atlantic coast. The Georgia migratory bird table I reviewed lists no brant season, so do not plan a brant hunt in the state without a written confirmation from the Wildlife Resources Division.

Light geese and white-fronts show up unevenly, so scout before you commit a morning. If you want a look at what flyway-edge light goose hunting looks like elsewhere, our Illinois goose season guide covers a state with much heavier migration.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Georgia

Georgia keeps goose limits simple. The daily limit for Canada geese is 5 per day, combined across all segments, and snow and white-fronted geese carry a combined daily limit of 5. Possession limits are three times the daily limit, which works out to 15 geese in the field or in your freezer.

A third-party summary at AskHunting lists the same 5-bird daily limit and 15-bird possession for Canada geese. Limits can change from one year to the next, so read the current official guide every August when Georgia publishes it.

Pro Tip: Keep one wing or the head on each bird until you reach home or the processor. A game warden can only count what you can prove you took in season.

Hunting out of state? Limits differ from place to place, so check our Ohio goose season page before you pack the truck.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Georgia

A light goose conservation order is a special spring hunt that some states use to reduce overabundant snow and Ross’s geese. It runs after the regular season, usually with liberal bag limits and looser rules on methods. This is where the research gets murky for Georgia.

AskHunting reports a Georgia conservation order from mid-February through March with no bag limit. But the official 2026-27 season table summarized on eRegulations shows light geese ending Jan. 31, and I found no state press release announcing a spring segment.

Important Note: Treat any spring light goose hunt in Georgia as unconfirmed until the Wildlife Resources Division publishes dates and rules. Call the nearest WRD regional office or read the current regulations guide before you hunt, because methods and permit requirements for conservation orders differ from the regular season.

Light goose numbers in Georgia are small compared to the Midwest, so a spring order would matter more to a few hunters in specific counties than to the state as a whole. If one is offered, expect the same migratory bird license and federal duck stamp requirements to apply.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Georgia

You need more than a hunting license to hunt geese in Georgia. The state wants a Waterfowl and Migratory Bird License, and federal law wants a duck stamp. The first is how Georgia handles its federal Harvest Information Program registration.

The Georgia Wildlife Resources Division says the license is required for every migratory bird hunter age 16 or older, even if a hunting license is not required. It is valid for one season, running March through February, so you must buy a new one each year.

What to Buy Before Your First Hunt

  1. Buy a Georgia hunting license through the Go Outdoors Georgia portal, unless you are a resident landowner hunting your own land.
  2. Add the GA Waterfowl and Migratory Bird License. It is free with a Sportsman’s, Lifetime, Youth Sportsman’s, Disability Sportsman’s, or Honorary license, and free for resident landowners hunting their own land.
  3. Buy a Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp, known as the duck stamp. It is required for geese and is not covered by any Georgia license.
  4. Finish hunter education if you were born on or after January 1, 1961.

Georgia’s portal states that hunting requires completion of a Hunter Education course if you were born on or after 1/1/1961. If you also plan to hunt big game this fall, you will add a Big Game License and a free harvest record. Our guides to Georgia deer season and Georgia turkey season walk through those add-ons.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Georgia

Legal shooting hours for all migratory birds in Georgia run from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset, according to the Georgia migratory bird page. Check a sunrise table for the county you hunt, because that half-hour window shifts by several minutes across the season.

Federal waterfowl rules set the baseline for legal methods, and Georgia follows them. Confirm each point below in the official guide before opening day:

  • Use a shotgun no larger than 10 gauge, plugged so it holds no more than three shells total.
  • Shoot nontoxic shot only. Lead is illegal for waterfowl.
  • Never hunt over bait, including scattered grain or a field that was recently seeded or manipulated for the hunt.
  • Falconers need a valid falconry permit and a hunting license.

Water access has its own rules. On Lakes Allatoona and Lanier, you cannot hunt within 600 feet of a dock, house, structure, bridge, road, boat ramp, marina, or open recreation area. On Lake Walter F. George, you also need a Corps permit to hunt waterfowl on most of the lake, and land hunting is limited to designated hunting areas.

Pro Tip: Print your license, duck stamp, and the regulations page for the lake you hunt, and keep them in a zip bag in your blind. Wardens check paperwork first, and cell service is poor on many Georgia reservoirs.

Goose season ends in January, but Georgia hunting does not. Our Georgia alligator season guide and Georgia bear season guide cover the other big draws on the state calendar. For a heavier migration picture on the other side of the continent, read our Texas goose hunting season guide.
