Goose Hunting Season in California
Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Plan your goose hunting season in California around a single opening day and you will miss most of it. The Northeastern Zone opens its goose season October 3, 2026, while the Balance of State opens October 24. Late hunts then run as far as March 10, 2027.

The dates, limits, and special areas change by zone and by species. A white-front limit that works in one zone can put you over the line in another.

This guide covers 2026-27 goose dates by zone, Canada goose rules, light goose and brant seasons, bag and possession limits, the late-season hunts that stand in for a spring conservation order, license requirements, and legal hours and methods. Use it to build your calendar, then confirm everything against the current California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) regulations booklet before you load the truck.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in California

California splits its waterfowl hunting into zones, and each zone gets its own goose calendar. The Northeastern Zone opens first, the Colorado River Zone follows, and the Balance of State, Southern San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California zones open about three weeks after the Northeast. The table below uses dates from MyWild.Report’s zone tables, which read the dates from CDFW and checked them on September 2, 2026.

ZoneRegular Goose SeasonLate or Early Hunts
NortheasternCanada geese Oct. 3 to Jan. 10; white and white-fronted geese Oct. 3 to Nov. 29 and Jan. 1 to Jan. 13White and white-fronted geese Feb. 5 to Mar. 10, 2027
Balance of StateOct. 24 to Jan. 31Early large Canada Oct. 3 to 5; late Canada Feb. 20 to 21; late white-fronted and white geese Feb. 20 to 24
Southern San Joaquin ValleyOct. 24 to Jan. 31None listed
Southern CaliforniaOct. 24 to Jan. 31None listed
Colorado RiverOct. 23 to Jan. 31None listed

Youth hunters get their own days. Youth waterfowl days are Feb. 13 to 14, 2027 in most zones, and Sept. 19 to 20, 2026 in the Northeastern Zone. Mentors planning a first hunt should lock those weekends in early.

If your fall also includes doves, check the California dove season guide so the two calendars do not collide.

Important Note: Season dates are set every year inside federal frameworks, and agencies correct their own pages during the year. Treat the table above as a planning tool and verify the final dates in the CDFW waterfowl regulations before you hunt.

Canada Goose Season in California

Canada geese (Branta canadensis) are the most widely distributed goose in the state, and California treats them differently from the migratory whitefronts and snows. Cackling geese (Branta hutchinsii) count in the same bag. The daily bag limit for Canada and cackling geese is 10 in the aggregate.

The rules that trip people up involve Large Canada geese, the resident birds that hang around parks, ponds, and golf courses. CDFW says it has kept harvest regulations conservative for Large Canada geese in the traditional breeding zone, while limits have loosened elsewhere because of population growth and nuisance complaints. That is why limits for Large Canadas vary by region.

  • Northeastern Zone: Canada geese Oct. 3 to Jan. 10. California Waterfowl’s regulation summary shows the Large Canada goose limit in this zone rose to 3 birds per day.
  • Balance of State: An early hunt for large Canada geese only runs Oct. 3 to 5, with a late Canada goose hunt Feb. 20 to 21.
  • North Coast Special Management Area: All Canada geese Oct 3 to Dec 19 and Feb 12 to Mar 10, with a daily limit of 10 and only 1 Large Canada goose. Large Canada geese are closed during the late season.
  • Southern zones and Colorado River: Canada geese fall under the regular goose seasons in the table above.

Hunters coming from the Midwest should expect a different setup. Our Iowa goose season guide shows how a Mississippi Flyway state structures its Canada goose hunting for comparison.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in California

Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are the white geese in your bag, and they are the birds that fill Sacramento Valley rice fields. Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), called specks or specklebellies, run on the same regular season dates in most zones. In the Northeast, white and white-fronted geese split into two segments, Oct. 3 to Nov. 29 and Jan. 1 to Jan. 13, plus the late hunt from Feb. 5 to Mar. 10.

The Sacramento Valley Special Management Area protects whitefronts. There, white-fronted geese stay open with the general goose season only through December 21. Ducks Unlimited’s reporting from the 2025-26 season shows why it matters: the X-Zone around the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge closed in mid-December to protect greater white-fronted geese. The same Ducks Unlimited migration alert noted that goose hunting was slow that year, except in select areas holding massive flocks of snow and Ross’s geese.

Black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) is a short, tightly regulated season on the coast.

  • Northern brant season for black brant runs Nov. 29 to Dec. 14.
  • In California, the brant season must end no later than December 15.
  • Recent regulatory text sets the brant daily bag limit at 2. Federal harvest-strategy results can change the final number and season length from year to year.
  • Humboldt Bay South Spit (West Side) is closed to all species during brant season.

Balance of State brant dates are not confirmed in the sources reviewed for this guide, so check the CDFW booklet for the Morro Bay and Bay Area options. If you are weighing a trip north for light geese, our Minnesota goose season guide covers the other end of the flyway.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in California

California counts geese as an aggregate daily bag with sub-limits by type. The sub-limits are where hunters get into trouble, because a limit of 30 does not mean 30 of any goose. The table below pulls the 2026-27 limits from California Waterfowl’s approved-season summary.

Zone or AreaDaily BagSub-LimitsPossession
Northeastern Zone3020 white geese, 10 dark geese, no more than 6 white-fronted geese or 3 Large Canada geeseTriple the daily bag (90)
Balance of State3020 white geese, 10 dark geese, no more than 6 white-fronted geeseTriple the daily bag (90)
Sacramento Valley SMASame as Balance of StateOnly 3 may be white-fronted geeseTriple the daily bag
North Coast SMA (Canada geese)10Only 1 may be a Large Canada gooseTriple the daily bag (30)

The white-front limit dropped. CDFW’s proposal explains that the old limit of 10 came from a 2003 harvest strategy, and the Pacific Flyway Council adopted a new strategy in September 2025. The new daily limit is 6 in the Northeastern, Southern San Joaquin Valley, and Balance of State zones, and in the Klamath Basin Special Management Area, per the Fish and Game Commission document.

Southern zones have historically carried much smaller dark goose limits. Under the 2018-19 rules, Southern California allowed 23 geese, of which only 20 could be white and only 3 dark. Confirm current numbers for the Southern California and Colorado River zones before you hunt there.

Common Mistake: Hunters who learned the rules before 2026 still count 10 white-fronts. The limit is now 6 in most zones and 3 in the Sacramento Valley Special Management Area.

Possession limits are simpler. Possession is triple the daily bag limit. If you are comparing numbers with another state, the Illinois goose season guide shows how different the structure can be.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in California

A Light Goose Conservation Order is a federal tool that lets states open extra light goose hunting after the regular season ends, usually with relaxed methods and no daily limit. It targets overabundant snow, blue, and Ross’s geese in the central and eastern flyways. Ducks Unlimited covers it in its February 2026 Central Flyway Light Goose Conservation Order reporting.

California does not run a spring conservation order. None of the California regulation text or season tables reviewed for this article list one. The state’s version of that opportunity is the late goose season in February and March, which comes with tighter rules than a federal conservation order.

  • Northeastern Zone: white and white-fronted geese Feb. 5 to Mar. 10, 2027.
  • Balance of State: late white-fronted and white geese Feb. 20 to 24.
  • North Coast SMA: Canada geese Feb 12 to Mar 10.

Location rules limit late-season hunting. Under Title 14 section 502, hunting is not permitted during the late season on wildlife areas listed in sections 550 to 552, except on Type C wildlife areas in the North Central and Central regions. Read the full text in 14 CCR 502 and plan on private land, navigable water, or an approved area.

Hunters who want a real spring conservation order should look at Central Flyway states. Our guides to goose hunting in Texas and goose hunting in Colorado cover the seasons in those states.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in California

To hunt geese in California you need a valid hunting license, a state duck validation, and a federal duck stamp. A hunting guide in the Sacramento Valley lists the same requirement: a California hunting license with state and federal duck stamps. California annual hunting licenses run from July 1 through June 30, so a license bought for last season will not cover this one.

Here is the usual checklist before opening day:

  1. Carry your hunter education certificate if you are a first-time California hunter.
  2. Buy or renew your annual hunting license for the 2026-27 license year.
  3. Add the state duck validation and the federal migratory bird hunting stamp.
  4. Complete the federal Harvest Information Program (HIP) registration, which CDFW normally adds when you buy your license.
  5. Check access rules for any state wildlife area, national wildlife refuge, or private duck club you plan to hunt.

Fees change, so get current prices from CDFW rather than relying on a blog post. Hunters who already hold tags for other California seasons can plan around the California deer season, spring turkey dates, and bear season rules.

Pro Tip: Keep a printed copy of your license, duck validation, and federal stamp in a dry bag. Wardens check paperwork at blinds and parking areas, and wet phones fail at the worst time.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in California

Waterfowl shooting hours in California run from half an hour before sunrise to sunset on most public and private land. Some state wildlife areas close hunting earlier in the day, so check the posted rules for your specific area. Set your alarm with a margin, because the legal start time is earlier than most people think.

Legal methods are strict and mostly follow federal migratory bird rules.

  • Shotguns only: use a 10 gauge or smaller with a plug limiting the gun to three shells.
  • Nonlead shot only: steel is the standard choice. One Northern California guide suggests a 12 gauge with steel through shot.
  • No baiting: you cannot hunt over bait, and you cannot shoot from a moving boat under power.
  • Calls: mouth calls and decoys are legal. Do not assume electronic calls are legal for waterfowl in California, because the state restricts them. Verify with CDFW before you use one.

Falconry is a recognized method. California Waterfowl reports three falconry-only days after the regular season in the Balance of State, Southern San Joaquin Valley, and Southern California zones, February 20 to 22. Late-season hunters should also review the location limits in the previous section.

Before opening day, scout your zone, confirm your limits, and check CDFW for any in-season updates. Do that and you will spend your time in the blind instead of explaining a violation to a warden.
