Since October, 49 wild bird carcasses collected from across Utah have been submitted for disease testing and tested positive for avian influenza. The birds most impacted include eared grebes in Box Elder, Davis, Salt Lake, Tooele, and Weber counties, and Canada geese across Box Elder, Cache, Davis, Iron, Sevier, Salt Lake, Summit, Utah, Washington, and Weber counties.
On the domestic poultry side, a significant commercial outbreak occurred in fall 2025. In September 2025, the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food confirmed HPAI in a commercial turkey facility in Sanpete County. Nearly 35,000 turkeys were put down after the case was discovered at the Sanpete County farm.
In Utah, no human infections have been reported, although bird flu has been found in animals at some poultry and dairy farms. - You will receive payment from USDA via direct deposit in about 2–3 weeks.
APHIS offers two methods to reimburse producers for the depopulation and/or disposal of birds affected with HPAI — the D&D Flat Rate method or the Detailed Financial Plan method. Your case manager can help you determine which method is most advantageous for your operation size and circumstances.
APHIS will also compensate you for materials — such as contaminated feed or egg packaging — that must be destroyed because they cannot be safely or adequately cleaned. For backyard flock owners with smaller operations, the process is slightly different. If the flock has 500 birds or fewer, or a total indemnity and compensation cost equal to or less than $10,000, the HPAI-Affected Backyard Flock Management Agreement form is used instead of the standard indemnity request.
