Can You Hunt Bears in West Virginia in 2026? What the Law Actually Says
November 6, 2026
Bear hunting season in West Virginia 2026 is not one season. It is a stack of overlapping windows that start in late August and run through December, with a four-day winter hunt after that.
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) sets the dates, and they differ by county, weapon and hunter class. This article walks you through each rule you need, in the order you will run into it.
One thing worth knowing up front: there are no permit-only counties for any bear firearms season in 2026. That makes West Virginia easier to plan for than many states with draw systems.
Pro Tip: Download the WVDNR 2026-2027 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary before you pick a county. The county-by-county season tables are what decide your exact dates.
Bear Hunting Season Dates in West Virginia 2026
The black bear season is built from several segments. Black bear archery and crossbow season is Sept. 26 through December 31, 2026. That is the longest window and it runs statewide.
Firearms seasons are split and vary by county. Early bear firearms season begins on Saturday, August 29, 2026, and only four counties are included: McDowell, Wyoming, Logan and Mingo. A special September and October firearms season and a firearms season concurrent with deer gun season follow.
The state also lists a concurrent antlerless deer and bear season. It takes place on private and public land in 41 counties, or parts thereof, from October 22-25.
| Season | 2026 Dates | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Early firearms (special lottery hunt) | August 29 to September 7 | Select counties and WMAs |
| Youth, Class Q and Class XS (first split) | September 12-13 | All or parts of 26 counties |
| Archery and crossbow | September 26 to December 31 | Statewide |
| Youth, Class Q and Class XS (second split) | October 17-18 | 51 counties open to firearms deer hunting |
| Concurrent antlerless deer and bear | October 22-25 | 41 counties, or parts thereof |
The August, September and youth dates above come from the WVDNR’s 2026-27 proposed seasons document and its black bear seasons page. For the remaining county-specific gun splits, use the regulations summary.
Bear Season by Weapon and Method in West Virginia: Archery, Muzzleloader and Firearm
Your weapon decides which window you hunt. Archery and crossbow hunters get the full September 26 to December 31 stretch. Firearms hunters work the split county seasons.
Muzzleloader hunters have a winter option. The state’s January Mountaineer Heritage Season lets hunters take one black bear with a percussion sidelock or flintlock rifle or pistol, and a bear taken during that season does not count toward the annual bear bag limit. Confirm the 2027 dates in the regulations summary.
Handguns are restricted. The regulations also bar hunting bear, deer or wild boar with a revolver or pistol except under specific conditions, so read the weapons section before you carry a sidearm as your primary.
If you also pursue other seasons with a bow, see our bow hunting laws in West Virginia breakdown.
Spring Bear Season in West Virginia
There is none. The WVDNR dates its bear seasons from late August through December, plus the four-day Mountaineer Heritage Season in January, and does not schedule a spring hunt.
If you are looking for spring bear opportunity, you will need to look at western states. In West Virginia, your spring hunting option is turkey, covered in our turkey hunting season in West Virginia guide.
Bear Hunting Zones, Units and Management Areas in West Virginia
West Virginia does not use numbered game units for bear. It uses counties, and each county is either open or closed for a given bear segment.
The firearms segments in different counties open on different dates, which is why the county tables matter. Some segments cover only part of a county, so check any county listed with directional splits such as east or west.
The special early lottery hunt is tied to select Wildlife Management Areas in the open counties. Hunt the right WMA on the right dates, and check WMA-specific rules before you go.
Bear Hunting License, Tag and Permit Requirements in West Virginia
You need a valid West Virginia hunting license plus the proper bear stamp. Hunters must have a valid West Virginia hunting license and the appropriate bear stamp before heading to the woods.
The regulations summary says that to hunt black bear, you must also hold the Class DS bear damage stamp. License combinations are listed in the summary’s license section.
Landowners hunting their own land follow separate rules, also laid out in the summary. Our hunting license requirements in West Virginia page covers the base license side, and the hunting laws in West Virginia overview covers the wider rules.
Common Mistake: Buying a base license and skipping the bear stamps. The base license alone does not cover bear.
Bear Permit Draws and Lotteries in West Virginia
Most of West Virginia’s bear hunting needs no draw. The state confirms that no county is permit-only for bear firearms seasons in 2026.
The exception is the early special hunt. The WVDNR commissioners approved a special lottery gun hunt from Aug. 29-Sept. 7, 2026, for specific counties. If you want that early window, apply through the WVDNR’s lottery process before the deadline it posts.
Nonresident Bear Hunting in West Virginia
Nonresidents can hunt bear in West Virginia, but they pay nonresident license rates and carry the same stamps the rules require. The regulations summary lists current nonresident license fees and combinations.
Out-of-state hunters should also know that the early August and September hunt in southern counties is a lottery hunt, so plan around the application window rather than showing up in late August.
Nonresident hunters can also look at the neighboring state’s rules in our Virginia hunting season coverage if you are planning a multi-state trip.
Bear Bag Limit and Harvest Quota in West Virginia
The bag limit is two bears per year with a regional condition. Two black bear may be taken during the archery, crossbow and firearms seasons combined, provided at least one bear is taken from a designated group of counties.
The WVDNR’s proposed seasons document names those counties: Boone, Fayette, Kanawha, Logan, McDowell, Mingo, Raleigh or Wyoming. The daily bag limit is one bear.
West Virginia manages harvest through these bag limits and season structure rather than a published per-hunter quota. Your Mountaineer Heritage bear does not count against the annual limit, as noted above.
Baiting Rules for Bear Hunting in West Virginia
Do not assume baiting is legal. West Virginia law restricts the use of bait and feed when hunting, and bear is covered by those restrictions. Read the baiting provisions in the regulations summary and in Chapter 20 of the West Virginia State Code before you set anything out.
Digging into the code is worth the time here. A baiting violation can end your season and cost you your harvest.
Hunting Bears with Hounds in West Virginia
Dogs are allowed, but only in certain seasons and counties. The first youth split runs September 12-13, 2026 in all or parts of 26 counties open to bear hunting with or without dogs. The second youth split is different: the use of dogs is prohibited.
There is also a firm bowhunting rule. The regulations say you may not use dogs while bow hunting for black bear except when dog use is legal during the firearms season, and there is an exception for tracking a mortally wounded bear.
Always check whether your county is listed as dog or no-dog for the specific segment you plan to hunt.
Legal Weapons and Methods for Bear Hunting in West Virginia
Legal bear methods include archery equipment, crossbows, centerfire firearms in firearms seasons, and, in the winter Mountaineer Heritage season, traditional muzzleloaders. Snares and similar devices are not legal methods for taking bear.
Handgun use for bear is limited. Check the weapons rules in the regulations summary for the caliber and conditions that apply.
The state also allows a drone for one narrow purpose. An unmanned aerial vehicle can be used for tracking and locating mortally wounded deer, bear, wild turkey or wild boar. That is a recovery tool, not a scouting tool.
Legal Bears and Protected Bears in West Virginia
West Virginia’s open game animal is the black bear. Protect yourself by confirming what you are shooting before you pull the trigger, especially at dusk or in thick cover.
Check the regulations summary for the rules on cubs and sows with cubs. Hunters should treat any family group as a no-shoot situation unless the rules say otherwise.
The WVDNR also asks hunters to help monitor reproductive rates, and a section of the summary explains how.
Youth and Special Bear Hunts in West Virginia
Young hunters get their own two-day windows. The Youth, Class Q and Class XS bear season runs September 12-13, 2026 in all or parts of 26 counties open to bear hunting with dogs.
The second split follows. It runs October 17-18, 2026 in 51 counties open to firearms deer hunting, with no dogs allowed.
The winter Mountaineer Heritage Season is another special hunt. It combines deer, bear and turkey into a short January window, with the Class DS bear stamp still required where the summary says so.
Where to Hunt Bear in West Virginia: Public and Private Land
You have good options on both. Public hunting means Wildlife Management Areas, state forests and national forest land, and the early lottery hunt is specifically tied to select WMAs.
The concurrent October 22-25 season applies to both private and public land in the listed counties. The southern coalfield counties are central to the state’s bear management.
On private land, get written permission and follow landowner rules. Landowners hunting their own property have specific provisions in the regulations summary.
Best Time to Hunt Bear in West Virginia
Timing comes down to food. Bears lean on summer berries until hard mast is available, as described by the WVDNR in the material summarized here: acorns, hickory nuts and beech nuts become the focus in fall.
That makes late September through October a strong stretch around oak and hickory stands, especially in a good mast year. Early archery gives you the longest runway, while the gun splits concentrate pressure.
Late-season hunts can still produce, but cold weather pushes bears toward dens. If you also track den timing, our guide on when bears come out of hibernation in West Virginia explains the seasonal cycle.
Pro Tip: Scout food, not tracks. Find the white oak flat that is dropping acorns and plan your sit around it.
Bear Hunting Hours, Sunday Hunting and Blaze Orange in West Virginia
Sunday hunting is limited during the bear gun season. The black bear gun season includes Sunday closing days. Look at the regulations summary for exactly which Sundays are closed in your county.
Legal shooting hours and blaze orange requirements are set in the regulations summary. Wear the required orange during firearms seasons and any season where the summary calls for it.
Even where it is optional, bright orange is cheap insurance in the busy firearms weeks.
Tagging, Check-In and Reporting a Bear in West Virginia
You must register every bear electronically. The state’s season listings mark each bear window as one where the animal must be electronically registered.
West Virginia also has a tooth rule. A legislative rule requires all successful bear hunters to submit a first premolar tooth to the DNR by January 31 of the year following the harvest.
- Tag the bear at the kill site as the regulations require.
- Register the bear electronically within the time the summary allows.
- Pull the first premolar tooth and mail it to the WVDNR by January 31.
