Deer hunting season in Hawaii 2026-27 is not one statewide season. It is a patchwork of island-by-island hunts, and two islands have no deer season at all. Yes, you need a Hawaii hunting license, and on public land you also need the right permit or tag for the unit you plan to hunt.

Hawaii has two huntable deer species. Axis deer are hunted on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi, and Columbian black-tailed deer are hunted on Kauaʻi only. This article breaks down the dates, methods, tags and rules for each, so you can plan before applications open.

Pro Tip: Hawaii deer dates are set by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) and announced by island each year. Always match your hunt to the current DLNR announcement for your unit before you book travel.

Deer Hunting Season Dates in Hawaii 2026-27

Your dates depend entirely on the island. World Deer’s Hawaii overview summarizes the DOFAW game mammal table this way: axis deer on Maui, Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi, blacktails on Kauaʻi only, and no deer hunt on Oʻahu or Hawaiʻi Island.

The state also announces the Lānaʻi axis deer hunt on its own schedule. Hawaii News Now is not needed to confirm it: the DLNR news release dated October 2, 2026 states that applications for the 2027 Lānaʻi Axis Deer Hunting Season open Monday, October 12, 2026.

IslandDeer SpeciesSeason Structure
KauaʻiColumbian black-tailed deerArchery, muzzleloader and rifle, by unit; announced by DLNR each year
LānaʻiAxis deerAnnual public hunt by application; 2027 applications opened October 12, 2026
Maui and MolokaʻiAxis deerUnit-based hunting under DOFAW rules
Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi IslandNoneNo deer season on the DOFAW game mammal table

For the Kauaʻi archery season, DLNR’s 2025 Kauaʻi announcement shows the usual pattern: unit-specific archery seasons running September through December 31, with some units also open June through August. Use that as a guide to how the 2026-27 announcement is structured, not as the dates themselves.

Archery and Crossbow Deer Season in Hawaii

Archery is the most accessible deer hunt in Hawaii. On Kauaʻi, DLNR’s announcements list archery-only units with a bag limit of one deer of either sex per archer per season. DLNR’s Kauaʻi deer release confirms that bag limit, and the rules require a deer archery permit-tag.

Successful archers can keep going. A hunter who has already filled the season bag limit may accompany a hunting group without a firearm for the rest of the season, according to DLNR’s 2024 Kauaʻi announcement.

The sources reviewed do not describe a separate crossbow deer season for Hawaii. Check the archery equipment language in Chapter 13-123 and the annual announcement before bringing a crossbow.

Muzzleloader Deer Season in Hawaii

Muzzleloader deer hunting is a tag-only, short-window hunt. On Kauaʻi, DLNR has run muzzleloader tag seasons in Units A, B and L in past years, with one deer per muzzleloader tag. DLNR’s 2023 Kauaʻi announcement shows the layout.

Unit rules differ. In Unit A, feral pig hunting is closed during deer season, while pig hunting stays open in Units B and L, and dogs are permitted in Unit B.

On Lānaʻi, the axis deer program also includes a muzzleloader hunt. The state’s Chapter 13-123 exhibits list axis deer muzzleloader hunts as a one-deer-per-hunter, tag-required season, with dates set annually.

Firearm Deer Season in Hawaii (Rifle and Shotgun)

Hawaii has no statewide rifle deer season. Lānaʻi’s general rifle axis deer hunt runs March 19 to May 30, 2027, and Kauaʻi blacktail rifle hunts follow a separate DLNR announcement by unit, according to our rifle deer season breakdown for Hawaii.

On Kauaʻi, the regular rifle season in Units E1 and H runs year-round on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and state holidays, with an annual permit required. Unit E2 is open daily year-round with an annual permit, per DLNR’s Kauaʻi announcement.

For caliber, DOFAW’s game mammal page sets a minimum rather than an approved list: when hunting without dogs, you need a rifle with at least 1,200 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. That rules out most small-bore rifles for deer.

Youth and Disabled Hunter Deer Seasons in Hawaii

Lānaʻi has a dedicated youth axis deer hunt. Chapter 13-123 lists a youth hunt for axis deer with one deer per youth hunter and a tag requirement, held in the early part of the season.

The sources reviewed do not show a separate disabled-hunter deer season in Hawaii. If you need an accommodation, contact the DOFAW office for the island you plan to hunt.

All hunters still need to satisfy hunter education rules. DOFAW lists a narrow exception for people born before January 1, 1972 who can show a Hawaiʻi hunting license issued before July 1, 1990.

Antlerless, Late and Holiday Deer Seasons in Hawaii

Hawaii does not run antlerless, late or holiday deer seasons the way mainland states do. Seasons are built around units, weekdays and state holidays instead.

State holidays are part of the schedule on Kauaʻi. The regular rifle season in Units E1 and H includes state holidays along with Friday through Monday, so a holiday weekend can add an extra hunting day.

The Lānaʻi hunt is different. It is an application-based public hunt with assigned days, and the sex of the animal that may be taken is set in the annual announcement.

Hawaii Deer Hunting Zones, Units and Counties

Hawaii manages public deer hunting by numbered or lettered hunting units, not counties. On Kauaʻi, the units named in DLNR announcements include A, B, D, E1, E2, F, H, J, K and L. On Lānaʻi, public hunting happens in Hunting Units 1, 2 and 3 of the Lānaʻi Cooperative Game Management Area.

Maps showing hunting boundaries and check-in station locations are available at the Līhuʻe DOFAW office and west Kauaʻi hunter check-in stations, per DLNR’s Kauaʻi announcement.

IslandWhere the Rules Are Written
KauaʻiChapter 13-123 Exhibit 1 and the annual DLNR announcement
Maui, Molokaʻi, LānaʻiChapter 13-123 exhibits for each island
Hawaiʻi IslandExhibits 11 and 12; no deer season, but other game mammals

Deer Bag Limits in Hawaii

Bag limits are low and usually one deer. On Kauaʻi archery units, the limit is one deer of either sex per archer per season. Muzzleloader and rifle tags are generally one deer per hunter per season or license year, depending on the unit.

On Lānaʻi, the public hunt allows one axis deer per hunter, according to the DOFAW season structure summarized by World Deer.

Maui is the exception. Chapter 13-123 states that any deer encountered while hunting on a public hunting area on Maui may be taken regardless of number or sex, per the DLNR Chapter 123 rules document. Maui Nui’s axis deer population was estimated at 26,000 in 2025, according to a DLNR impact survey from May 2026.

Antler Point Restrictions and Buck Rules in Hawaii

Hawaii has no antler point minimums. Its buck rules are about spike bucks and sex of animal, and they apply by unit.

In Kauaʻi’s Unit A, spike bucks (one-by-one antlered bucks) and female deer may not be taken during the regular muzzleloader or rifle tag seasons, per DLNR’s Kauaʻi release. Other units allow either sex.

The sex of the animal allowed on some public hunts is set each year, so read the announcement for your unit.

Deer Hunting License, Tag and Permit Requirements in Hawaii

You need a valid hunting license from DOFAW to hunt, kill or possess any game mammal. That requirement is in HAR 13-123-3. A current-year Wildlife Conservation Stamp is also part of the license structure, on public or private land.

  • Carry your license on your person at all times in the hunting area.
  • Deer tags are non-transferable between hunters.
  • Kauaʻi deer archery permits are cheap: $5 for residents and $25 for nonresidents, according to World Deer’s summary of DOFAW fees.
  • Lānaʻi hunts require applying during the announced window; tag fees apply.

Pro Tip: Lānaʻi applications for the 2027 axis deer season opened October 12, 2026. Watch the DLNR hunting announcements page each fall so you do not miss the window.

Nonresident Deer Hunting in Hawaii

Nonresidents can hunt deer in Hawaii with a nonresident hunting license, the Wildlife Conservation Stamp, and the same unit permit or tag residents need. The main difference is cost: Kauaʻi’s deer archery permit is $5 for residents and $25 for nonresidents.

Lānaʻi’s axis deer hunt is by application, so plan around the application window rather than the hunt dates. Check the DLNR hunting page for license fees and the hunting calendar.

Firearms travel is a separate issue. Check airline and Hawaii firearm import rules well ahead of a trip.

Where to Hunt Deer in Hawaii: Public and Private Land

Public deer hunting happens in designated hunting units, with seasons, methods and often limited days. On Kauaʻi, those units have check-in stations, and every hunter must check out of Units A, B, E and H by a set time after sunset.

Private land is simpler. Game mammals may be hunted on private land throughout the year with a valid hunting license and the landowner’s permission, unless the species is prohibited.

  • Kauaʻi: public blacktail units, archery through rifle
  • Lānaʻi: Cooperative Game Management Area, by application
  • Maui and Molokaʻi: axis deer in public hunting areas and on private land

Hunting Deer on Your Own Property in Hawaii

On your own land, the rules are lighter but not absent. You still need a valid Hawaii hunting license, and the species must be one that is legal to hunt. Chapter 13-123 allows year-round game mammal hunting on private land with the landowner’s permission.

Axis deer cause crop damage on Maui Nui. Chapter 13-123 includes a section on nuisance or crop damage, so landowners dealing with damage should contact DOFAW about options before acting.

Blaze Orange, Shooting Hours and Legal Methods in Hawaii

Hawaii’s game mammal rules cover hunting hours, artificial light and legal equipment. They do not appear in the sources reviewed to set a statewide blaze orange requirement, so check the island exhibit for your unit.

The rules prohibit hunting game mammals with artificial light, except optical sighting devices during authorized hunting hours. Legal equipment includes rifles, shotguns, handguns, and bows and arrows, with unit-level limits. Some units are muzzleloader-only or archery-only, and firearms are not permitted in archery areas.

  • No skinning or de-boning of deer carcasses in the Kauaʻi hunting area, per DLNR.
  • Hunters must preserve game so it stays usable.
  • Dogs are allowed in some units only.

Sunday Deer Hunting in Hawaii

Sunday hunting is legal and often required. Kauaʻi’s regular rifle season in Units E1 and H includes Sunday, and some archery and rifle days listed in Chapter 13-123 are weekends and state holidays only. Lānaʻi public hunt days can also fall on Sundays.

For the 2025 Kauaʻi announcement, archery in some units ran weekends and Mondays during part of the year. Always confirm which days your unit allows.

Chronic Wasting Disease Rules for Deer Hunters in Hawaii

CWD is not a practical concern for Hawaii deer hunters. The state has no native deer and no wild cervid population carrying the disease, and DOFAW’s game mammal materials do not publish a CWD carcass-import rule, as noted in our Hawaii rifle deer guide.

If you are bringing a carcass or meat from a mainland trip back to Hawaii, check with the Hawaii Department of Agriculture before you travel.

Deer Harvest Reporting, Tagging and Transport in Hawaii

Tag your deer immediately and keep it intact. DLNR’s Kauaʻi announcement says hunters must preserve their game in a condition that allows identification, and no skinning or de-boning is allowed in the hunting area.

Check-in and check-out matter on public land. Hunters on Kauaʻi must sign out of Units A, B, E and H by one hour after sunset during deer season. On Lānaʻi, DLNR has noted that the OuterSpatial E-Check Station procedures were temporarily discontinued for 2026.

  1. Tag the animal at the kill site.
  2. Keep the carcass identifiable until you leave the hunting area.
  3. Check out at the station for your unit.
  4. De-bone only where the announcement allows it.

Best Time to Hunt Deer in Hawaii

The best time depends on the island, not the rut. Hawaii’s blacktails and axis deer are not tied to a mainland-style rut calendar, and your hunt window is set by the tag or season you draw.

On Kauaʻi, the long September through December archery season gives you the most flexibility. For axis deer on Lānaʻi, the spring rifle hunt in March through May 2027 is the main window, and applications come first in October.

If you are comparing options, see our Hawaii turkey season guide for another island-by-island hunt, and check the Hawaii rifle deer season page for firearm specifics.
