Goose Hunting Season in Pennsylvania: 2026-27 Dates, Zones, and Bag Limits
October 16, 2026
Pennsylvania’s goose hunting season in 2026-27 has more moving parts than most states. You get an early September hunt, a regular season split by zone, a late-winter light goose season, and a possible spring conservation order. Pennsylvania licenses about 90,000 migratory bird hunters each year, according to a September 2025 Lancaster Online report, and many of them hunt geese.
This guide walks you through dates, zone boundaries, daily limits, licenses, and legal methods so you know what applies where you hunt. As of October 11, 2026, the early season is over. The regular Canada goose season is only a couple of weeks away in much of the state.
Important Note: Seasons and limits change from year to year, and some dates below come from outlets summarizing the Game Commission’s schedule. Check them against the official 2026-27 Hunting & Trapping Digest before you scout or buy shells.
Goose Hunting Season Dates in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania splits its goose hunting into two zones: the Resident Population Zone (most of the state) and the Atlantic Population Zone in the southeast. In the Atlantic Population Zone, the regular Canada goose season grew from 30 days to 45 days for 2026-27, and the daily bag limit rose from one bird to three. That is the biggest change for southeastern hunters this year.
The table below pulls the main 2026-27 segments together. The early season details come from the Game Commission’s season-opener announcement. The regular and light goose dates come from a state hunting guide that summarizes the posted schedule.
| Season Segment | Area | Dates | Daily Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early Canada goose | Resident and Atlantic Population Zones | Sept. 1-25 | 8 in the Atlantic zone (possession 24) |
| Early Canada goose exception | Western Crawford and northwestern Mercer counties | Sept. 1-12 | 1 (possession 3) |
| Youth Day | Statewide | Sept. 19 | Follows regular limits |
| Regular Canada goose | Resident Population Zone | Oct. 24-Nov. 27; Dec. 15-Jan. 18; Jan. 29-Feb. 20 | 5 |
| Regular Canada goose | Atlantic Population Zone | Nov. 21-27; Dec. 4-Jan. 18 | 3 |
| Regular light goose | Statewide | Nov. 7-March 10 | 25 |
Sunday hunting remains prohibited for migratory game birds, including waterfowl, doves and woodcock, during the 2026-27 license year. Every segment above is a Monday-through-Saturday hunt.
Common Mistake: Assuming Pennsylvania’s expanded Sunday hunting for other game applies to geese. It does not. Federal rules govern migratory birds, so Sundays stay closed.
Canada Goose Season in Pennsylvania
The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is the bird most Pennsylvania hunters chase. Resident geese live in the state year-round, which is why the early September season exists. Early and late seasons were created to reduce resident goose populations, crop damage, and nuisance complaints.
The early season runs Sept. 1 to Sept. 25, 2026, in both the Resident Population Zone and the Atlantic Population Zone. Federal frameworks would have allowed a 15-goose daily bag, but Pennsylvania’s early season frameworks list that maximum and the state sets a lower limit. Early season birds are mostly local geese feeding on cut hay, corn stubble, and pond edges.
Regular Season by Zone
In the Resident Population Zone, the regular season opens Oct. 24 and runs in three segments through Feb. 20, with a five-goose daily limit. Hunters in the Atlantic Population Zone get fewer calendar days but a longer total season than last year. The zone’s dates are Nov. 21-27 and Dec. 4-Jan. 18, with a three-goose limit.
Migrant Atlantic Population birds are the reason for the tighter southeastern rules. A 2025 Lancaster Online report noted that the prior year’s estimate of breeding pairs was 23 percent lower than the year before, which is why the 2025-26 limit dropped to one bird. This year’s increase suggests the population has recovered enough to loosen the rules again.
Youth Day and Early Season Tips
Licensed junior and mentored youth hunters can hunt ducks, mergansers, coots, gallinules, Canada geese, and brant statewide during Youth Day on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2026. If you have a young hunter at home, plan for next September now. Early-season geese are less wary than late-season flocks, which makes them a good first hunt.
Pennsylvania dove season opens the same day as the early goose hunt. If you hunt both, our Pennsylvania dove season guide covers the dates and limits.
Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Pennsylvania
Snow and Ross’s geese are grouped together as light geese, and they get their own season. The Pennsylvania Game Commission explains that the start and end dates of the light goose regular season in both goose zones shifted later this year. One state hunting guide lists the regular light goose season at Nov. 7 through March 10 with a daily limit of 25. That makes it the longest goose hunting opportunity in the state.
Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) are the species you will see most often. The Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area region in southeastern Pennsylvania is well known for huge snow goose flocks during migration, and large flocks migrate through southeastern Pennsylvania, particularly around Middle Creek. Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) look like smaller snow geese and often mix into the same flocks. Learn the size and bill differences, because you will shoot both under the same light goose limit.
Greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons), often called specklebellies, are less common, but can occasionally be found in agricultural areas and wetlands in Pennsylvania. Brant (Branta bernicla) are a coastal species that rarely show up inland. The sources reviewed for this article did not list separate season dates or bag limits for white-fronted geese or brant, so confirm both in the Hunting & Trapping Digest before you hunt them. Brant are legal for youth hunters on Youth Day.
Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Pennsylvania
Daily limits depend on the species, the zone, and the time of year. Possession limits follow a simple pattern: the early-season figures reported by the Game Commission are three times the daily limit. That is 8 daily and 24 possession in the Atlantic Population Zone, and 1 daily and 3 possession in the western Crawford and northwestern Mercer exception area.
| Goose Type | Season | Daily Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Canada goose, Atlantic Population Zone | Early (Sept. 1-25) | 8 |
| Canada goose, western Crawford and northwestern Mercer | Early (Sept. 1-12) | 1 |
| Canada goose, Atlantic Population Zone | Regular | 3 |
| Canada goose, Resident Population Zone | Regular | 5 |
| Light geese (snow and Ross’s) | Regular | 25 |
The Game Commission’s 2026-27 migratory game bird announcement confirms the Atlantic zone’s three-goose limit. The five-goose Resident Population Zone limit and the 25-bird light goose limit come from the state hunting guide cited earlier.
Pro Tip: Keep a tally on your phone or in your license holder. Possession counts include birds in your freezer if they are still within the limit period, and game wardens ask about them.
If you take a banded bird, report it. The Game Commission encourages hunters who harvest banded ducks, geese, doves, or woodcock to report those bands through the federal reporting system. Your report helps biologists track survival and migration.
Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Pennsylvania
The spring light goose conservation order is a special late-winter hunt aimed at holding down snow goose numbers. Whether Pennsylvania runs one is decided year by year. The decision on a 2027 light goose conservation season will be made after spring 2026 population surveys are conducted.
The Game Commission’s proposed 2026-27 seasons document says the conservation order would not be used unless spring survey results call for it. The agency has also said that even if the conservation season is suspended, the regular season will continue to provide ample hunting opportunity for light geese. The regular light goose season runs through March 10.
The sources reviewed here did not include a final announcement on a 2027 conservation order. Watch the Game Commission’s newsroom and your HuntFishPA account for updates. If a conservation order is announced, read its specific rules on methods, licenses, and areas before you hunt, since they can differ from the regular season.
Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Pennsylvania
You need more than a base hunting license to hunt geese in Pennsylvania. The state licenses migratory bird hunters separately, and federal waterfowl rules add a stamp requirement for adults. Here is what to carry:
- General hunting license: Residents and nonresidents both need one. Your general license already covers antlered deer and turkey, so you can use the same base license for fall hunts across species.
- Migratory Game Bird License: The Resident Migratory Game Bird License costs $3.97, and the nonresident version costs $6.97, according to the Game Commission’s license types page. Hunters age 12 or older must buy it, and it serves as proof of Harvest Information Program participation.
- Federal Duck Stamp: All hunters age 16 or older must purchase the Federal Duck Stamp when hunting migratory waterfowl. The same license types page lists the eDuck at $30.97, and it prints immediately and stays valid for 45 days from purchase while the physical stamp is mailed.
- Hunter education: First-time hunters generally need a hunter-trapper education certificate. Hunter-Ed’s Pennsylvania license overview says a license runs July 1 through June 30 and is purchased through HuntFishPA, by mail, or from an approved agent.
Specialty hunts add paperwork. Pymatuning goose blind hunters must carry proof of a blind reservation, a general hunting license, and the state migratory game bird license, among other items. Those requirements are strictly enforced and handled outside the regular license system.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Pennsylvania
Federal rules set the outer limits for waterfowl shooting hours. Migratory bird hunting generally runs from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Early-season frameworks are looser: hunting is allowed one-half hour after sunset under the federal frameworks. Confirm what Pennsylvania adopted for 2026-27 in the Digest and print the sunrise and sunset times for your county.
Legal methods come down to a few rules you should know before you buy shells:
- Use nontoxic shot. Lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl hunting, including geese.
- Keep your shotgun plugged. Federal frameworks allow unplugged shotguns, but Pennsylvania state statute prohibits them. A plug that limits your magazine is required.
- Stay off Sundays. Migratory game birds are off limits all day, every Sunday.
- Follow area rules. State game lands, Pymatuning, and private farms can each have extra requirements on blinds, access, and decoys.
Pennsylvania’s goose hunting season rewards hunters who read the zone map first. Match your county to the right zone, check the dates for your segment, and confirm your license and stamp before opening day. If you hunt across state lines, compare rules in neighboring states like Ohio and Maryland, or check farther afield in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.
