Goose Hunting Season in Colorado
Spread the love for animals! 🐾

Goose hunting season in Colorado doesn’t start on one date. It opens in September for early Canada geese west of the Continental Divide, and it closes in April for light geese east of I-25. That’s nearly eight months of legal hunting if you know which zone you’re in.

The catch is that Colorado splits its goose seasons by flyway, by zone, and by goose type. A hunter in North Park follows different dates than one on the South Platte, and a snow goose hunter follows different dates than a Canada goose hunter.

This article lays out the 2026-27 dates, limits, license requirements, and legal methods so you can plan your hunts. Season dates and bag limits come from the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) 2026 Small Game and Waterfowl Brochure, so check it before you head out.

Goose Hunting Season Dates in Colorado

Colorado sits in two flyways. The Central Flyway covers the area east of the Continental Divide, and the Pacific Flyway covers the area west of it. Seasons open at 12:01 a.m. on the date shown, so you can’t shoot in the first minutes of opening day’s darkness before that time.

North Park, the San Luis Valley and South Park run their own goose seasons, and dark and light geese have different dates. The table below pulls the 2026-27 dates together. Dates from January on fall in 2027.

ZoneDark GooseLight Goose
Central Flyway regular season (east of the Divide)Nov 2, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027Oct 31, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027
North Park (Jackson County)Oct 3, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027Oct 31, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027
South Park (Chaffee, Custer, Fremont, Lake, Park, Teller counties)Oct 3, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027Oct 31, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027
San Luis ValleyOct 3–21, 2026 and Nov 21, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027Oct 31, 2026 – Feb 14, 2027
Pacific Flyway Western ZoneOct 3–11, 2026 and Nov 6, 2026 – Jan 31, 2027Same as dark goose
Pacific Flyway Eastern ZoneOct 3, 2026 – Jan 6, 2027Same as dark goose

Don’t confuse goose dates with duck dates. West of the Divide, the Western Zone duck season runs October 3 to October 20 and November 6 to January 31, 2027, and the Eastern Zone runs October 3 to January 15, 2027. Goose segments in those same zones end sooner, so a duck hunter who sees geese on the last days of the duck season may be out of luck.

Important Note: Some summaries published before the final brochure listed dates from CPW’s recommended package. One guide noted that as of July 2026 its dates reflected that recommended package. The dates above match the final 2026 brochure as reported by The Colorado Hunting Guide, but confirm your zone’s dates with CPW before you hunt.

Canada Goose Season in Colorado

The Canada goose (Branta canadensis) is the bird most Colorado goose hunters chase. Resident honkers live along Front Range reservoirs and rivers all year, and migrants arrive from the north once cold fronts push them south. In CPW’s schedule, Canada geese fall under the dark goose seasons.

The earliest chance comes in the Pacific Flyway. The early Canada goose season runs September 1–9 each year west of the Continental Divide. That window overlaps with the first days of dove season, so you can split time between the two. If you hunt both, our dove hunting season in Colorado breakdown covers the September dates.

East of the Divide, the regular dark goose season opens November 2, 2026. Hunters in North Park and South Park get a head start, with seasons that open October 3. The San Luis Valley splits its season into two segments, with a break between October 21 and November 21.

Where Colorado Canada Goose Hunters Set Up

Most of the action sits on the eastern plains. The South Platte River Basin draws large numbers of ducks and geese, and John Martin Reservoir in southeastern Colorado attracts migrating waterfowl. Jackson Lake State Wildlife Area in northeastern Colorado also has wetlands and reservoirs that hold waterfowl.

Field hunting over decoys is the standard approach. Plan to be in the field before first light, since geese leave their roosts early to feed and return to water later in the morning.

Snow, Ross’s, White-Fronted Goose and Brant Seasons in Colorado

Colorado’s schedule lumps these birds into two groups rather than giving each species its own season. Snow geese (Anser caerulescens) and Ross’s geese (Anser rossii) are light geese, and they follow the light goose dates in the table above. In the Central Flyway, light goose season opens October 31, 2026, and runs through February 14, 2027. West of the Divide, light geese share the same dates as dark geese.

That gives snow goose hunters a longer regular season than Canada goose hunters east of the Divide. It also leads into the spring conservation order, covered below. If you want to compare how neighboring and wintering states handle light geese, see our guide to goose hunting season in Texas.

The greater white-fronted goose (Anser albifrons) and brant (Branta bernicla) don’t appear as separate seasons in any of the 2026-27 schedules reviewed for this article. Specklebellies do show up in Colorado, and guided Front Range hunts list them as a possible bonus alongside Canada and snow geese. Brant are rare visitors to the state. Check the species and bag definitions in the CPW brochure before you shoot a white-front, so you know how it counts against your limit.

Common Mistake: Hunters often assume light goose dates apply to every goose in a flock. A mixed group of snows and Canadas can fly over you in late October, and only the light geese are legal in most Central Flyway zones before November 2. Identify the bird before you pull the trigger.

Goose Bag and Possession Limits in Colorado

Daily limits depend on the zone and the type of goose. HuntWise lists the Colorado goose limit as 5 to 15 per day, depending on the zone and type of goose. The most common figure is the dark goose limit, which BlindBook’s 2026-27 table lists as 5 per day with a possession limit of 15 in the Central Flyway zones.

Light goose limits are far higher. For the 2025-26 season, light geese allowed 50 birds per day with unlimited possession. Western Pacific Flyway zones were lower, with light geese limited to 10 per day. The 2026-27 brochure is the authority on any change, so confirm your zone’s figure.

Daily and possession limits count every bird in your possession, including birds in your freezer or vehicle. Compare Colorado’s numbers with Iowa’s goose limits or Minnesota’s goose limits if you plan an out-of-state trip.

Spring Light Goose Conservation Order in Colorado

The conservation order is an extra season aimed at reducing overabundant light goose populations. For 2026-27 it runs February 15 to April 30, 2027, in the area east of I-25. Dark geese are not legal during this period, so only snow and Ross’s geese can be taken.

The biggest draw is the limit. The conservation order has no bag limits. You also skip one stamp, since a federal stamp is not required to take light geese during the conservation order season.

Some outfitters run guided hunts into March. One northeastern Colorado outfitter offers spring snow goose hunts from mid-February to mid-March. Spring birds are wary after a long season, so expect to run large decoy spreads and hunt fields with scouted feeding patterns.

Closures still apply. During the special late light goose season and any conservation order, light goose hunting is allowed within the Johnson Pond Special Goose Closure. That is an exception to the usual closure, so check which areas apply before you set up. Wisconsin hunters who want to compare spring rules can read goose hunting season in Wisconsin.

Licenses, Permits, and Registration Required to Hunt Geese in Colorado

You need several items to hunt geese legally. CPW says you need a small-game hunting license to hunt waterfowl. If you are 16 or older, you also need the $33 Federal Duck Stamp and the $12.76 Colorado State Waterfowl Stamp. As of 2026, that is the fee CPW lists on its waterfowl hunting page.

Your Colorado Goose Hunting Checklist

  1. Small game license. You can buy one online at CPWShop.com, by phone at 1-800-244-5613, or at sales agents around the state.
  2. Habitat Stamp. A $12.76 annual stamp is added automatically for ages 18 to 64, and residents with a lifetime license are exempt.
  3. Colorado Waterfowl Stamp. The state stamp prints on your license and is only valid once you sign it in ink.
  4. Federal Duck Stamp (16 and older). An electronic stamp stays valid from the day it is sold through the following June 30.
  5. HIP registration. Hunters who want to hunt small game, coyote, and migratory birds must sign up with the Harvest Information Program each year.

Buying a license is a separate step from getting your HIP number, and you need both before you hunt. You’ll also need proof of identity and hunter education when buying a license. A Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is required for hunters age 12 and older.

Timing helps your budget. Small game licenses and Waterfowl and Habitat Stamps are valid March 1 through March 31 of the following year, which is 13 months. A license bought in the spring covers the whole fall season and the next conservation order.

Pro Tip: Colorado’s small game license works for geese, ducks, doves, and other small game, so one purchase covers a lot. If you also plan to chase big game, see our guides to deer hunting season in Colorado, bear hunting season in Colorado, and turkey hunting season in Colorado.

Shooting Hours and Legal Methods for Goose Hunting in Colorado

During the regular season, federal rules set waterfowl shooting hours from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Spring conservation order hours and methods can differ from the regular season, so read the brochure’s migratory bird section before you hunt in February through April. CPW’s waterfowl page points hunters to the “Legal Migratory Bird Hunting Methods” section of the brochure for those details.

Standard federal migratory bird rules apply to regular goose seasons in Colorado:

  • Use a shotgun no larger than 10 gauge, plugged so the magazine and chamber hold no more than three shells.
  • Use nontoxic shot only. Lead shot is illegal for waterfowl.
  • Don’t shoot from a motor vehicle or a moving boat.
  • Don’t use electronic calls during the regular season.
  • Retrieve and count every bird you down toward your limit.

Closures and Special Restrictions

Some waters and areas have goose-specific restrictions. The Code of Colorado Regulations prohibits goose hunting at several named sites, including Empire Reservoir in Weld and Morgan counties and Grand Lake and Windy Gap Reservoir in Grand County, where hunting is barred within 100 yards of the high-water lines. The text of those Colorado regulations also lists closures at Riverside Reservoir and Jumbo Reservoir, where hunting is prohibited as posted.

State wildlife areas and state parks post their own waterfowl rules, so check signs at the access point. Traveling hunters can compare Colorado’s methods with those in Michigan and Ohio, where steel shot and shell limits also apply.

Before opening day, confirm your zone’s dates, review the limits for the goose type you plan to hunt, and make sure your stamps and HIP registration are in order. The BlindBook Colorado season page gives a quick zone-by-zone look, but the CPW brochure is the final word.
