That means a standard ear tag for a cow must now carry both a printed number and an electronic chip — a visual-only metal tag applied after that date no longer qualifies as official identification. Which Livestock Can Use a Microchip as Official Identification in New York

When a Microchip Qualifies for Interstate Movement in New York

Injectable 840-ID microchips are designed to last a lifetime without replacement and are manufactured under strict quality standards, certified by the USDA for accuracy, durability, and readability. Always confirm that the chip you are ordering is on the USDA’s official AIN device list before implanting it as official identification.

Registering a Livestock Microchip in New York

Implanting a chip is only half the process. For the microchip to function as official identification — and for it to support disease traceability, ownership disputes, or interstate movement — the number must be recorded in the appropriate databases and tied to a valid Premises Identification Number (PIN).

Here is the registration process for New York livestock producers:

  1. Obtain a Premises Identification Number (PIN). Every New York livestock operation must register a premises with the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. That veterinarian is responsible for confirming the chip number, recording it on the CVI, and ensuring the number is entered into the relevant tracking system.
  5. Record distribution in AIMS. The Animal Identification Management System (AIMS) is a web-based program used to administer official animal identification numbers and devices.   6. Obtain a Domestic Animal Health Permit (DAHP) if dealing in livestock. To obtain a DAHP, complete a DAHP application and supplement and send them, along with a $50 fee, to the Division of Animal Industry.
